LOS ANGELES –The Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles used a late first half goal by Herbert Biste to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 1-0 this afternoon in a CCAA match-up in Los Angeles. SF State had three chances in the final minutes of regulation to tie the match but the Golden Eagles' came up with three stops including one with 20 seconds left off the foot of the Gators'
Sam Merritt.
"I was proud of how our team played today," said SF State head coach
Matt Barnes. "CSULA is a tough place to play and we went toe to toe with the conference favorites--we limited their shots and had a great chance to tie the game late. Their goalkeeper made a fantastic save in the end."
This match ends a grueling a four-match road trip for the Gators as they will return home this Friday, October 17 at 12:30pm. SF State will begin a three-match home stand that will start with No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona coming to Cox Stadium this Friday.
SF State (5-5-2, 1-4-1 CCAA) held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal attempts, but the Golden Eagles held a 5-1 corner kick advantage.
The Gators had a chance in the 19
th minute to take the lead, but Mike Beigarten recorded one of his game high 7 saves by stopping
Emmanuel Serrano's attempt. They had two more chances in the 20
th minute to take the lead but Beigarten stopped
Jorge Valadas and
Sam Merritt's attempts.
The match remained scoreless until the 44:21 mark, when Herbert Biste connected on his second goal of the season off a ball from Troy Dumlao to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Cal State L.A. who improves to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA, looked to double its lead early in the second half. Biste and Dane Nielsen had their shot attempts be stopped by the Gators'
Daniel Boyer.
SF State had a chance to tie the match in the 72
nd minute, but once again Beigarten stopped the Gator attempt this time off the foot of
Nathan Fernandez.
The Gators had a strong surge at the end of the match, but all three attempts were stopped by Beigarten or the Golden Eagle defense. The first one came in the 84
th minute as the Golden Eagle goalkeeper stopped
Yezzan Naber's attempt to tie the match.
Then with less than two minutes left in the match, the Golden Eagle goalie stopped
Cory Rodas' header. The final attempt came in the 89
th minute as
Sam Merritt tried to connect on a corner kick by Serrano in the final minute but it was stopped by the Golden Eagle defense.
