CHICO –Chico State Wildcats made the most of the opportunities late this afternoon to key their 2-0 win over the visiting SF State Gators in a CCAA match-up at University Stadium in Chico. The Wildcats improve to 9-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the CCAA.
"SF State played hard, but Chico State had a couple more effective players who determined the outcome this afternoon," said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. "We had our chances on goal and corners but could not put them away."
The Wildcats, who are currently in second place in the CCAA and 7
th in this week's NCAA Division II West Region rankings, took a 1-0 lead in the third minute on a goal by Pooja Patel. Patel scored after taking a pass from 30 yards out from Cassi Scroggins and dribbled around a Gator defender and shot it into the far post.
SF State had an attempt to tie the match in the 15
th minute when
Elizet Ceja's header was stopped by the Wildcats' Brianna Furner.
The Gators (7-7-2, 2-6-1 CCAA) had another attempt for the tying goal in the 37
th minute when
Sabrina Corpus' shot was stopped by Furner.
In the 41
st minute, it looked like
Kelsey Wetzstein was going to tie the match for the visitors but once again Furner preserve the Chico State 1-0 lead as the match went into halftime.
Chico State tried to double its lead in the 66
th minute when
Allison Land stopped Ella Fries' shot on goal attempt.
Five minutes later,
Rachel Arce had her attempt to tie the match for the visitors stopped by Furner. Once again Furner came up big in the 76
th minute as she kept
Kat Meeink's attempt from tying the match.
The Wildcats doubled their lead in the 77th minute on a goal by Lindsey Dias off a ball from Stephanie Vaquerano.
SF State had a chance to cut into the Wildcat lead in the 77
th, when
Kat Meeink's attempt sailed wide as the Wildcats' held on for the 2-0 win.
Furner had 7 saves in goal for the victors while
Allison Land had two saves for the Gators, who were only out-shot by the Wildcats 14-13. SF State held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Gators will down travel down to Southern California this Sunday, October 26 for a 2pm conference match-up at Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 4-1 at home earlier today.
