SAN FRANCISCO – SF State's six-match unbeaten streak was snapped this afternoon in Seaside, Calif., as the Gators lost 2-1 to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters in a CCAA match at the Otter Sports Complex. Rudy Gonzalez scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 67
th minute for the victors.
"We did not do the little things right this afternoon," said SF State Head Coach
Matt Barnes. "WE made two critical errors which the Otters took advantage for their two goals."
The Gators (5-2-2, 1-1-1 CCAA) did control all aspects of the match with their hosts. They outshot Cal State Monterey Bay 14-8 including 6-2 in shots on goal while holding a 3-2 corner kick advantage.
The match was scoreless until the 16
th minute when Anthony Velazquez gave the Otters a 1-0 lead on a ball lobbed in from Jovani Delacruz.
SF State had a chance to tie the match three minutes later, but
Jakob Velega's shot was blocked by the Otter defense. The visitors had two more chances in the 23
rd and 28
th minute to tie the match but
Nick Harb's shot hit the post and Matias Fernandez stopped
Sam Merritt's attempt to tie the match at 1-1 this time off the foot of
Sam Merritt.
SF State had two more chances in the final minutes of the half once again to tie the match, but this time
Max Talbert's shot hit the crossbar and
Matias Rodriguez's shot was blocked.
Cal State Monterey Bay (2-4-2, 1-2 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead heading into the second half.
The Gators tied the match at 1-1 in the 59
th minute as
Daniel Totays connected on his second goal of the season off a ball from
Andy Gomez.
"Our bench put us back in the match in the second half, but once again made that critical error," added Barnes. "We outplayed Cal State Monterey Bay in every aspect of the math but we did not take advantage of the situation.
Fernandez recorded one of six saves on the day, two minutes later as he stopped
Cameron DeJong's attempt from giving the Gators the lead.
In the 66
th minute, Rudy Gonzalez gave the Otters the lead on unassisted goal a lead they would not relinquish.
SF State had two chances to tie the match, but both sailed wide left or high as the Otters held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Gators will return to the pitch this Sunday, October 5 at 2pm for a CCAA match with Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif.
