ARCATA – Humboldt State's Kenji Murao scored the golden goal off a ball from Austin Swartz from 35-yards out to give the hosts the 3-2 double overtime victory over the visiting SF State Gators. The Gators played a man down for the final 54 minutes of the match and rallied back late in the second half to send the match into the sudden death periods.
"The guys played very well this afternoon," said SF State head coach
Matt Barnes. "I am proud of how the guys played this afternoon unfortunately we did not get the result we wanted."
SF State (5-3-2/1-2-1 CCAA) outshot the Lumberjacks 20-18 including 18-11 in regulation while also held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. The visitors also had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Daniel Boyer had 5 saves in goal for the Gators while Javier Torres had 6 in goal for the hosts, who improved to 8-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA.
The match was scoreless for the first 22 minutes of the first half until the Gators'
Jakob Velega connected on a ball from
Adam Lenth for his team leading fourth goal of the season.
SF State had a chance to double its lead right before the end of the half, but
Sam Merritt's shot was stopped by the Lumberjacks' goalkeeper.
The Gators had another chance to double their lead, but
Emmanuel Serrano's shot was stopped by Torres in the first five minutes of the second period. Then one minute later, the Lumberjacks' Humberto Alvarez connected on a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1. This was his sixth goal of the season.
Humboldt State took a 2-1 lead, two minutes later on a goal by Riki Michael off a ball from Austin Swartz and Connor Wilkinson.
Serrano had a chance to tie the match for the Gators stopped by Torres in the 70
th minute. The Gators did not give up as they tied the match at 2-2, when
Matias Rodriguez connected on his first goal of the season in the 75
th minute.
Humboldt State had a chance for the game-winner in the final minutes of regulation, but Boyer stopped Chuck Pitts' chance to be the hero to send the match into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Lumberjacks had the only chances to take the match but one was stopped by Boyer and the other sailed wide right to send the match into the second overtime period.
Rodriguez had a chance to be the hero for the Gators in the 103
rd minute, but Torres came up with the save.
Then with less than three minutes left in the second overtime, Murado connected on Swartz's second assist of the game for the golden goal.
SF State will continue its season long four-match road trip this Friday, October 10 at 7pm, when the Gators travel to Carson for a CCAA match with Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
