@SFState_WVB Falls To Cal State Monterey Bay In Straight Sets

Seaside – Saturday matches continue to be unkind to the SF State volleyball team, as the Gators fell to host Cal State Monterey Bay in straight-sets at the Kelp Bed.  The Gators (6-8/4-5) lost 18-25, 23-25, and 21-25 to the Otters who improve to 4-9/5-6 CCAA.

The match was much closer than the box score would indicate.  The two sides battled to the tune of 25 ties and 11 lead changes.  Leading the team on the evening was Kaileen Mejia who posted a match-high 11 kills with a .333 attack percentage.

Bria Morgan joined her in double-figures with 10 kills.  She also added 11 digs for her first double-double as a Gator.  Jacquie Brice recorded 32 assists on the evening, while Jessica Nicerio led the Gators with 16 digs.

Both sides were not very sharp on the attack, the Gators hit .148 on the evening, the Otters were not much better recording an attack percentage of .172.  However, Cal State Monterey Bay hit .256 in the first set and took the frame 25-18 to take the momentum.  With the set tied at 18-18 an Otter kill put CSUMB out front for good who went on a 7-0 run to take the frame.

In the second set the Gators attack was better, with Jaclyn Clark and Mejia registering five kills each.  The Gators led the second set 20-16 late, but could not close out the set.  CSUMB went on a run and tied the set at 22 on a Gators attack error.  The Otters closed out the set on yet another Gators attack error.

In the third and final set the Otters took advantage early and ran with it.  Coming out of the intermission, CSUMB jumped out to an 8-4 lead following a setting error.  Out of the timeout by the Gators, SF State tied the set at nine on a kill by Morgan.  The Gators tied the set again at 12-12 but could not overtake the Otters who would go on to win the set 25-21.

SF State returns to the friendly confines of SF State's gymnasium at the Don Nasser Family Plaza on Friday, October 10 when they host Chico State at 7:00 p.m.
