Pomona – Fresh of a five set match the night before the SF State women's volleyball team could not muster a repeat performance. The Gators fought hard but could not keep up with the Broncos attack, as Cal Poly Pomona defeated the Gators in straight sets (20-25, 21-25, 20-25) Saturday evening at Kellogg Gym.
As a team, the Gators (10-12/8-9 CCAA) hit .150 as a team, tallying 36 kills on 113 swings with 19 errors. Leading the Gators was senior middle blocker
Jazmine Williams who threw down 11 kills on 18 swings and hit a team-high .556.
Jaclyn Clark tallied nine kills, while
Melissa Horton boasted six.
Kaileen Mejia and
Bria Morgan also added five kills.
Setter
Jacquie Brice tallied 35 assists with six digs and two service aces.
Jessica Nicerio finished the night with a team-high 11 digs after not recording a dig in the first set.
Arianna Cruz also recorded double-digits in digs with 10.
The Broncos (12-8/10-7 CCAA) hit .284 as a team and started the match on fire, hitting .680 in the opening set. The Gators responded by hitting .387 to begin the match but it would not be enough. Clark started the match white-hot for the Gators, she tallied seven of her nine kills in the opening set, and hit .500. With the set tied at 14-14 CPP went on a 6-2 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Broncos' Deanna Blaine put the set away with one of her 12 kills as Cal Poly Pomona took the opening set 25-20.
In the second set the Broncos struck first and never gave the lead back. The Gators cut the lead to one early at 6-5 following a service ace by Clark, but from there the Broncos went on a 9-4 run to take their largest lead of the match 15-9. The Gators cut the lead to one late, 22-21, on a kill by Morgan. From there CPP scored three-straight capped off by a block on an attack by Horton to take the set 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
In the third and final set the Gators gave it their all, aided by solid play from Williams who tallied four kills and hit .800 in the set. The two sides battled to the tune of five ties and five lead changes. The Broncos' Nicoletta Stork tied the set up with one of her match-high 14 kills, at 13. From there Cal Poly never relinquished the lead winning the set 25-20.
The Gators return to action on Friday, November 7 when SF State hosts Cal State Monterey Bay at the Main Gymnasium at the Don Nasser Family Plaza, first serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
