Chico – The SF State women's volleyball teams' good fortune in five set matches finally ran dry on Saturday night on the road against Chico State. The Gators were riding a five-game win streak when matches went the distance, unfortunately the Gators were on the losing end of tonight's final set, falling to the Wildcats 3-2, 24-26, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 13-15.
The Gators (14-13/12-10 CCAA) had a career night out of
Jazmine Williams. Playing in her last game as a Gator, Williams finished the night with 19 kills on 31 swings for an astounding .548 attack percentage, she also recorded two aces, six digs and three block assists.
Fellow middle blocker
Kaileen Mejia also had a strong night for the Gators. She tallied 18 kills on 35 swings for a .400 attack percentage. Outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark was the only other Gator to record double-digit kills with 10. She also added a team-high 22 digs for a double-double.
Setter
Jacquie Brice tallied 51 assists on the evening to lead the Gators attack. She finishes her career 2,234 assists which is fourth all-time at SF State. She becomes just the third player in program history to record two 1,000 assist seasons.
Chico State (13-13/11-11 CCAA) took the match on their senior night winning the first, third and fifth and final set. The Gators hit a respectable .238 as a team, but tallied 27 errors, while the Wildcats hit .247.
Not surprisingly, the two sets the Gators won they hit .355 and .316 as a team. In the first set the Gators were led by Mejia and Williams who tallied six and five kill respectively. The Gators had set point late in the first up 24-22, but a Gator attack error and three-straight Wildcat kills gave the home team the opening match.
The second set was an adventure, it featured five ties and three lead changes. The Gators took the set on a kill by Williams and a service ace. After the break the two teams traded sets with the Wildcats taking the third and the Gators taking the fourth to force the fifth and final set.
In the final frame the Gators led 5-4 before the Wildcats went on a 6-2 run to take a 10-7 lead. Coming out of a timeout the Gators rallied back to tie the set at 10-10. Once again the Wildcats took a three point lead and once again the Gators tied the set at 13-13. But that is where the Gators luck would end. Chico State took the match 15-13 following a Gators attack error and a kill by the Wildcats on match point.Â
Even with the loss tonight the Gators still finished the season on a high note. With a 12-10 conference mark the Gators finished in a tie for sixth in the CCAA after being picked to finish second to last. Under second year head coach
Jill Muhe the Gators recorded a four win improvement in conference play from the previous season and secured the Gators first winning season since 2012. Â
