CHICO--- The Chico State Wildcats swept the season series from the SF State Gators by defeating their guests 71-57 this evening in Chico. The Wildcats had four players score in double digits and improve to 14-4 overall and 10-4 in the CCAA with the win.
Nefi Perdomo paced the Gators with a game high 20 points as they fall to 9-8 overall and 7-7 in the CCAA.
"This was a very rough trip this weekend for us," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "We have to start playing better basketball and that we will start working on that this Monday."
Besides Perdomo's 20 points, the Gators received 15 points from senior point guard
Calvin Otiono.
SF State shot 44% from the field but connected on 10 of its 18 attempts from three-point land including Perdomo and Otiono each connecting on three.
Chico State was paced by the duo of Jordan Semple and Amir Carraway each with 18 points while Giordano Estrada added 17 points. Sean Park chipped in 10 points for the Wildcats, who are in third place in the CCAA (two games out of first place).
Bren Haley's three gave the Gators an 11-6 early in the game, but the Wildcats went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-11 lead with 12:32 left in the half.
Udun Osakue's lay-up gave the visitors a 22-19 lead, but the hosts once again held the Gators scoreless going on an 11-0 run capped by a Semple lay-up to take a 33-22 lead.
Another Semple basket gave the Wildcats a 38-26 lead heading into the 15-minute halftime.
SF State cut the Wildcat lead to 44-35 on a Perdomo lay-up in the first nine minutes of the new stanza.
Estrada's three gave the Wildcats a 56-52 lead with 7:18 to go in the game.
Otiono's lay-up capped a 8-3 run by the Gators as they cut the deficit to 59-50, but the Wildcats increased their lead to 68-52 in the next two minutes to take a 70-55 lead, a margin they would not relinquish as they held on for the 71-57 win.
The Gators, who are now in sixth place, will return home for six of the final eight games of the regular season beginning with this Friday, February 7 as they host Cal State Dominguez Hills at The Swamp. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm PST. SF State defeated the Toros 79-68 in Carson on January 4 in the first meeting between the two teams.
