Box Score LA JOLLA – UC San Diego outscored the visiting SF State Gators 43-17 and connected on 17 three's for the game to key their 76-51 victory in an important conference game at the RIMAC Arena. Adam Klie and Aleks Lipovic combined for 45 of the Tritons' 76 points and were 11-for-17 from beyond the arc in the Triton victory.
"Give a lot credit to UC San Diego as the Tritons came out like a play-off team this evening," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "We need to learn on how to win against a high-level team." "We also need to rally from this defeat against a very good Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow night on the road."
UC San Diego jumped out to a 19-10 lead mid-way through the first half, but the Gators came right back and cut the deficit to 19-14 on a
Calvin Otiono lay-up at the 8;20 mark of the first half.
The Tritons built their lead back to 9 (26-17), but the Gators finished the half on a 17-7 run to take a 34-33 lead on a
Bennie Rhodes' three heading into the locker room.
The Gators held a 37-35 lead in the first two minutes of the second half, but the Tritons outscored their guests 14-5 to take a 49-42 on one of Lipovic's threes.
SF State cut the Triton to 51-48 at the 12:52 mark of the game, but the Tritons came right back and held the Gators scoreless and built a 66-48 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
Treavon Francis' lay-up made the final 76-51 for the Tritons, who move into a tie for sixth place in the CCAA standings. UC San Diego hold the tie-breaker with the Gators (12-10, 10-9 CCAA).
Klie finished with 24 points for UC San Diego and Lipovic had 21 points.
Will Overton, Jr. paced the Gators with 15 points while
Bennie Rhodes added 12 points and
Calvin Otiono chipped in 10 points. The Gators shot 14 of 17 from the charity stripe.
SF State will now travel to San Bernardino tomorrow evening for a scheduled 7:30pm tip-off with the No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. The Coyotes defeated Sonoma State 67-43 this evening in a CCAA contest at Coussoulis Arena.
