@SFState_WVB Wins Five Set Thriller Against Cal Poly Pomona

San Francisco – After finding themselves behind 2-1, the SF State volleyball team made a slight change to its lineup, the result was a ferocious comeback that propelled the Gators to wins in the fourth and fifth set to win Friday nights CCAA match against Cal Poly in five sets (26-24, 21-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-7).

The Gators (5-5/3-2 CCAA) needed a spark to start the fourth set, after falling to the Broncos (5-4/3-3 CCAA) after the intermission.  Head coach Jill Muhe made the switch to put Bria Morgan in the back row, the result was impressive, as the junior tallied seven of her match-high 18 kills over the final two sets.  The 18 kills marks the seventh straight match she's been in double figures in kills and also represents a new SF State career-best.

Morgan was joined by Jaclyn Clark and Jazmine Williams as the other Gators with double digits in kills.  Williams finished with 14 kills on 32 swings for a match-high .375 hitting percentage.  She was also a force at the night tallying seven total blocks including three solo blocks.  Meanwhile, Clark tallied another double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs.

Senior setter Jacquie Brice made it two matches in a row with at least 50 assists. She finished with another double-double recording 50 assists and 12 digs.  Arianna Cruz, Krista Forte and Jessica Nicerio were busy all night in the back row, the trio of defenders tallied 17, 15 and 16 digs respectively.

The Gators showed resiliency early in the first set.  After falling behind midway through the opening frame, SF State battled back to take the set 26-24.  The Gators hit .298 on the set smashing 18 kills, while holding the Broncos to a .213 attack percentage.

Cal Poly put the pressure back on SF State taking both the second and third set without facing much resistance.  The Gators hit .053 in the second and could not stop the Broncos in the third who hit .342 as a team
.
In the fourth set the Gators showed swung the momentum back with some great defense and relentless attacks.  After falling behind 7-2 early the Gators tied the set at 10 and eventually took it 25-19 on an ace by Clark, her third of the evening.  In the final set it was all SF State as the momentum from the fourth set carried over.  The Gators raced out to the early 8-5 lead following a kill by Brice.  From there the Gators held on and took the set and the match on block assist by Morgan, Williams and Melissa Horton.

Horton finished the evening with all around steady numbers, the senior finished with eight kills, two total blocks.

The Gators return to action tomorrow night when they host No. 19 UC San Diego at 7:00 p.m. at the SF State Gymnasium at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
