SAN FRANCISCO – Playing in their first overtime match of the season, the SF State Gators fell 2-1 to the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers (4-3-2, 1-1 CCAA) this afternoon in a CCAA match at Cox Stadium. Megan Ravenscroft connected on the golden goal with three seconds left in the first overtime period off a cross from Corryn Barney.
The Gators did have their chances this afternoon as they outshot their opponents 24-14 including 11-3 in the first half. SF State (5-3, 0-2 CCAA) also held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal attempts.
SF State had an early chance to take the 1-0 lead, but
Elizet Ceja's shot on goal attempt in the ninth minute was stopped by the Pioneer's Brianna Scholtens. This was one of Sholtens' nine saves on the day.
The Gators had another chance to take the lead in the final seconds of the first half, but
Brittany Oldham's shot was stopped by the Pioneer goalkeeper.
The Pioneers came out on fire in the second half as Ravenscroft looked like she was going to give the guests the lead, but
Allison Land came up big for the Gators.
Then in the 51
st minute, Ravenscroft connected on her first of two goals on the day from outside the box off a cross from Mindy Castro to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
SF State had many chances to tie the match including at the 75
th minute, but
Sydney Stout's shot was stopped by the Pioneer goalkeeper.
SF State finally tied the match at 1-1 at 79:17 when
Elizet Ceja connected on her fourth goal of the season off a cross from
Laura Shea.
The Gators had two chances to take the lead but both sailed over the net in the 83
rd minute, one off the foot of Stout and the other off of
Lauren Hayano.
Land recorded one of her four saves in the 86
th minute as she stopped Barney's shot for being the hero for Cal State East Bay to send the match into the sudden death overtime period.
SF State did not record a shot attempt in the overtime, but did have two corner kicks by
Kelsey Wetzstein in the 98
th minute but could not convert them into the golden goals.
Then with three seconds left in the overtime, Ravenscroft connected on her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Barney for the golden goal.
The Gators will look to get back on the winning track as they will begin a four-game road trip this Friday, October 3 at 3pm with a CCAA match with Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif.
