TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors (11-4, 8-2 CCAA) used a strong second half to key their 68-54 victory over the visiting SF State Gators this evening at Fitzpatrick Arena in Turlock. Chris Read was one of three Warriors to score in double figures with a game high 21 points as he went 8-for-15 from the field including connecting on five of his eight attempts from beyond the arc.
"We just ran out of gas in the second half," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "Cal State Stanislaus took advantage of it and they shot the ball probably their best they have all season in the second half."
Besides Read's 21 points, Rob Walters had 17 points and 10 rebounds Wes Bartole chipped in 14 points. The Warriors, who move into first place in the CCAA with their win a loss by Cal Poly Pomona to Cal State L.A., shot 48% from the field including 60% in the second half.
Udun Osakue had 16 points to lead the way for the Gators with
Derrick Brown chipping 10 points for the visitors.
"Udun had a great weekend for us in back to back games on the road," added Trevor.
Derrick Brown's three with 10:16 to go in the first half gave the Gators a 17-11 lead, but the Warriors went on a 12-4 run to take a 23-21 with a little under six minutes left in the half.
SF State (6-8, 4-6 CCAA) outscored the Warriors 5-0 in the next five minutes to take a 25-23 lead, but a three by Chris Read gave the hosts a 26-25 lead heading into the locker room.
Cal State Stanislaus outscored the Gators 23-9 in the first six minutes of the second half to take a 49-34 lead, a lead the Warriors would not relinquish.
A three by Osakue cut the deficit to 58-48 with just 4:30 on the clock. The Warriors finished the game outscoring SF State 10-6 to take the 68-54 victory.
Besides Osakue and Brown,
Justice Howard added 8 points and
Bren Haley dished out four assists to go along with his six points.
SF State will return home to the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza this Friday, January 23 at 7:30pm, when the Gators host Cal State Dominguez Hills.
