SAN FRANCISCO – SF State Gator forced 20 turnovers and held the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters to their second lowest scoring output of the season in their 73-58 win at the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza on the campus of SF State. With the win, the Gators are now 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA which places them in a five-way tie for second place one game out of first place.
Derrick Brown had a career high 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field including going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Udun Osakue added 20 points for the Gators, who improve to 5-1 at home.
Chiefy Ugbaja's lay-up capped an early 13-3 run by the Gators in the first seven minutes of the game.
The Otters (7-5, 3-3 CCAA) went on a 15-6 run to cut the Gator lead to 19-18, but SF State finished the half outscoring its opponents 14-5 to take a 33-23 lead into the half.
SF State held a 53-39 lead with 8:35 left in the game, but the Otters went on an 8-0 run to cut the Gator lead to 53-47.
Cal State Monterey Bay's Greg Anderson scored on a jumper to cut the deficit 61-56 with just 1:48 left on the clock.
Bren Haley's old-fashioned three-point play sealed the Gator win on their next possession to give them a 64-56 lead.
SF State finished the final 1:14 going 9-for-10 including Haley going a perfect four-for-four as the hosts took the 73-58 victory. Haley finished the evening with 7 points to go along with his 7 assists.
Alex Fertig paced the Otters with 15 points while Daye Turner added 12 points.
The Gators shot 50% from the field including 43% from three-point range and 17-for-19 from the line. SF State also out-rebounded the Otters 28-22.
The Gators will begin a four-game road trip this Friday, January 9 with a CCAA contest at Cal Poly Pomona with a scheduled tip-off of 7:30pm PST.
