LA JOLLA– For the seventh time this season, the SF State Gators held their opponents scoreless. This is the third time since 1998 that the Gators' defense has recorded 7 shutouts in a season and it's the second year in a row that they have posted that many shutouts. UC San Diego and the visiting Gators played to a scoreless draw this afternoon in La Jolla.
Daniel Boyer got the start in goal for the Gators and had three saves en route to his first shutout of the season. SF State had four shot on goal attempts to the Tritons' three while UCSD held a 16-13 shot attempt advantage. The hosts also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks including recording the only corner kick in the overtime periods.
Jake Velega recorded the first shot on goal attempt in the fourth minute of the match, but Cameron McElfresh recorded one of his four saves on the day.
The Tritons had their first shot on goal attempt be stopped by Boyer in the 21
st minute, when Uly de La Cal's attempt to give the hosts the lead came up short. UC San Diego (5-4-4, 4-2-2 CCAA) had another chance to take the lead, but Christian Cordell's header was stopped by Boyer in the 42
nd minute as the match went scoreless into the half.
The Gators had three chances early in the second half to take the lead, but
Ashley Watson's shot attempt either sailed high and went wide right in the 54
th minute. Then in the 59
th minute,
Sam Merritt had his shot attempt be blocked by the Triton defense. SF State had another chance for the lead, but
Daniel Herrera's attempt sailed wide left in the 64
th minute. Then in the 69
th minute, UC San Diego's Andy Sartor saw his chance to give the Tritons the lead sail high over the Gator goal.
Ilja Golubevs had his attempt to give the Gators the lead blocked by the Triton defense in the 80
th minute. It looked like Nathaniel Bloom was going to give the hosts the lead in the 81
st minute, but both of his attempts were blocked by the Gator defense as the match was sent into the overtime period.
In the first overtime period, Velega had his golden goal attempt be stopped by the Triton defense in the 94
th minute. Two minutes later, Brandon Magpayo had his attempt for the golden goal sail high as the match went into a second sudden death overtime.
Jordan Wusstig had a chance to be the hero for SF State, but McElfresh stopped his golden goal attempt in the 102
nd minute. Boyer came up big for the Gators in the 105
th minute as he stopped Magpayo's attempt to give the Tritons the victory.
In the final minutes of the second overtime, Bloom had his golden goal attempt hit the post and two minutes later Harbour had his attempt be blocked by the Gator defense.
The Gators will return home this Friday, October 16
th at 12:30pm, when they begin a four-match home stand. SF State will host Cal State L.A. on Friday, who is currently 7-2-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the CCAA after tying Chico State 1-1 this afternoon in Los Angeles.
