LA JOLLA –Even though holding an 18-8 shot advantage, the SF State Gators lost 2-0 to the UC San Diego Tritons this afternoon in a CCAA match-up in La Jolla, Calif. The Tritons (8-4-1, 4-3-1 CCAA) scored both of their goals in the final 13 minutes of the match.
Kelcie Brodsky recorded 8 saves en route to the shutout for the hosts while
Karin Nordin had no saves in goal for the Gators (6-4-3-, 2-2-3 CCAA).
It looked like the Gators were going to take the lead in the fourth minute as
Bianca Lowe's shot on goal attempt off a corner kick by
Kelsey Wetzstein as Brodsky recorded one of her eight saves on the day.
SF State had another chance to take the lead, but
Brittany Oldham's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Triton goalkeeper in the 16
th minute. The Gators had three more chances in the final minutes of the first half to take the lead, but
Autumn Fox and
Vanessa Penuna had their shots either sail wide or be blocked as the match went scoreless into the half.
The Gators came out firing early in the second half, but neither attempt by
Kayleen Belda or
Jada Williams got into the back of the net.
Laura Shea saw her attempt be blocked by the Triton defense in the 57
th minute.
UC San Diego had its attempt in the 68
th minute sail high over the net off the foot of Megumi Barber. Then nine minutes later, Wetzstein saw her attempt be stopped by Brodsky.
The Tritons took the 1-0 lead in the 78
th minute as Mary Reilly connected on a throw-in by Jordyn McNutt and pass from Kierrra Bocchino.
Penuna had an attempt to tie the match in the 81
st minute, but her shot sailed high over the goal.
UC San Diego doubled its lead in the 87
th minute, when Danielle Nunn connected on a cross from Katie O'Laughlin as the Tritons sealed the 2-0 win.
The Gators will return home as they begin a four-match home stand this Friday, October 16
th for a 3pm match with Cal State L.A.
