SAN FRANCISCO–
Ashley Watson gave the SF State Gators a 1-0 lead in the 35
th minute over the visiting sixth ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, but the visitors scored two unanswered second half goal to defeat their hosts 2-1. With the win, the Toros improve to 12-1-2 overall and 7-0-2 in the CCAA.
The Toros had the first chance to take the lead in the second minute, but Bryan Haley's shot sailed wide right. Seven minutes later,
Robert Kelly looked like he was going to give the Gators the lead but his shot sailed wide left. Cal State Dominguez Hills had another chance at the lead in the 28
th minute, but
Emmanuel Jimenez stopped Joey Chica's shot on goal attempt.
The Gators (5-6-3, 1-5-3 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead in the 35
th minute after the Toros were called for a foul as
Ashley Watson connected on a free kick from 25 yards out for his first goal in the purple and gold.
Neither recorded a shot attempt in the final 10 minutes of the half as the Gators took a 1-0 lead into the halftime.
Joe Rousseau had a chance to double the Gators' lead in the 48
th minute, but Chase Gentry recorded his only save of the day. The Toros went right down the pitch after that and the Gators were called for a foul in the box and Tony Alfaro connected on the penalty kick in the 50
th minute to tie the match at 1-1. This was his fifth goal of the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took the lead, three minutes later as Chica connected on his fifth goal of the season off a ball from Edkson Lemus and Pedro Velasquez.
Kelly had the Gators' only chance to tie the match in the 67
th minute, when his shot sailed high as the Toros held on for the 2-1 come-from-behind victory.
Jimenez had one save in goal for the hosts in 59 minutes while
Daniel Boyer had one save in the final 31 minutes in goal for the Gators.
The Gators will continue their four-match home stand this Friday, October 23 as they host Cal State San Bernardino at 3pm at Cox Stadium.
