SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State Gators and the Sonoma State Seawolves played to a scoreless draw this afternoon in their CCAA match-up at Cox Stadium on the campus of SF State. With the tie, SF State is now 5-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the CCAA while the Seawolves are now 5-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the CCAA.
The Gators outshot their visitors 13-11 including 5-3 in the two overtime periods while each had three shots on goal. Sonoma State did hold a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Mitch North had three saves in goal for the Seawolves while
Kevin Esquivel in his first start in goal for the Gators also recorded three.
The Gators controlled most of the first half as they had five shots to the Seawolves' one.
Right away, the hosts had a chance to take a lead in the third minute but
Jakob Velega's shot sailed wide right. Then 11 minutes later,
Jordan Wusstig's shot sailed wide right for the Gators.
James Aguirre had a chance to give the Gators the lead in the 37
th minute, but his shot sailed high over the goal. Then in the 38
th minute,
Max Talbert's bicycle kick off a corner kick from
Ashley Watson bounced over the goal as the score remained scoreless.
Sonoma State had a chance late in the half for the lead, but Esquivel stopped Raspreet Sandhu's attempt as the match went into halftime scoreless. SF State had a chance for the lead, but
Armando Flores' shot sailed wide right in the 50
th minute.
Then in the 82
nd minute, Esquivel stopped Jose Avalos' shot from going into the back of the net. The Gators had their chance for the game-winner be stopped by Mitch North in the 84
th minute off the foot of Aguirre.
Avalos had another chance for the game-winner but his shot sailed high in the 89
th minute as the match went into the sudden death overtime.
Wusstig recorded both of the Gator shot attempts in the first overtime period with both going wide right. With just 40 seconds left in the overtime, Sandhu saw his shot sail wide right to send the match into the second overtime period.
Robert Kelly had a chance to be the hero but his shot was blocked by the Seawolf defense in the 101
st minute. Then less than a minute later,
Sam Merritt had a chance to be the hero but his shot on goal attempt was stopped by North.
Sonoma State saw its only shot on goal attempt by stopped by Esquivel in the 106
th minute as Josh Sanchez tried to be the hero as the match ended in a scoreless draw.
The Gators will host Humboldt State this Sunday, October 4 at 2pm in another CCAA match-up. The Lumberjacks lost 2-0 at Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon in Seaside.
