SAN FRANCISCO– The 14
th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves (6-1-2, 4-01 CCAA) snapped the SF State Gators' three-game winning streak with a 1-0 win over their hosts this afternoon in a conference match-up at Cox Stadium. Kristal Luna on a free kick from 25-yards out in the 52
nd minute that went into the top right of the Gator net for the game-winner.
This was the Gators' first loss since opening up the season 0-2 on September 7, a stretch of seven matches. During that stretch, SF State was 6-0-1.
The Seawolves outshot SF State 16-8 including 6-2 on shot on goal attempts. Sonoma State also held a slim 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Gators had a chance to take an early lead, but
Bianca Lowe's shot was stopped by Ashley Luis in the 14
th minute.
Sonoma State had a chance to take a lead, but
Karin Nordin made one of her five saves on the afternoon stopping Katie Mohr's shot in the 31
st minute. Both teams had a chance late in the half to take the lead, but the Gators'
Kayleen Belda saw her attempt sail high in the 40
th minute and Katie Mohr's shot went wide right in the 42
nd minute to send the match in the halftime scoreless.
The match remained scoreless until the 52
nd minute, when Kristal Luna scored what proved to be the game-winner off a free kick.
SF State (6-3-1, 2-1-1 CCAA) had its only chance to tie the match in the 78
th minute but
Hanna Ghamari's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Luis.
Luis ended up with two saves on the day.
The Gators will continue their brief two-game home stand with a 11:30am starting CCAA match this Sunday morning against Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks lost 1-0 at Cal State Monterey Bay today in Seaside.
