SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State Gators snapped their three-game losing streak with their 1-0 win over the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.
Vanessa Penuna connected on a throw-in from
Molly Schuster in the 76
th minute for what proved to be the game-winner. This was the Gators' second shutout of the season as they improved to 7-6-3 overall and 3-4-3 in the CCAA.
The Coyotes did outshot their hosts 16-14, but the Gators held on a 6-3 shot on goal advantage. SF State also had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
CSUSB (4-8-3, 3-5-1 CCAA) recorded the first shot attempt of the match in the fourth minute, but Katie Gagner's shot sailed wide left. The Gators' first shot attempt came in the 13
th minute as
Bianca Lowe's attempt was blocked by the Coyote defense as was
Autumn Fox's shot attempt four seconds later. SF State had a chance at the lead, but Emily Whyte recorded one of her five saves on the day stopping
Sydney Stout's shot on goal attempt in the 30
th minute. The Coyotes saw had a chance at the lead, but
Karin Nordin stopped Denae Verdin's shot on goal attempt in the 43
rd minute as the match went into the half tied at 0-0.
The Coyotes drove down the pitch early in the second half, but Nordin recorded another save as she stopped Ebony Squier's attempt to give CSUSB the lead. Fox had another attempt to give the Gators the 1-0 lead, but Whyte stopped her attempt in the 59
th minute.
SF State finally got on the board in the 76
th minute when Penuna connected on her second goal of the season and first game-winner on a throw-in from
Molly Schuster.
The Gators defense held on in the final minutes of the match as they blocked Verdine's shot attempt in the 85
th minute for the 1-0 victory.
Nordin had three saves en route to her second shutout in goal for the Gators while Whyte had five saves in goal for CSUSB.
The Gators will finish off their home part of the 2015 regular season this Sunday, October 25 at 11:30am for a match with Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos defeated Cal State Monterey Bay earlier today in Seaside. Prior to the match on Sunday at 11:20am, the Gators will recognize their four seniors in
Karin Nordin,
Molly Schuster,
Kaylyn Toyama and
Danielle Vidal.
