SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's volleyball team enters post season play riding a massive wave of momentum. The Gators made it three-straight wins, all by sweeps, when they took down Cal State San Marcos in straight sets 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 on senior night.
SF State (14-13/12-8 CCAA) said farewell to three exceptional student-athletes on Friday night. Playing in their final home match was outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark, defensive specialist
Arianna Cruz and libero
Jessica Nicerio. The trio could not have been more active as the Gators have now won nine-straight sets dating back to the win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Nov. 7.
Clark led the way with a match-high 18 kills on 38 swings for a .368 attack percentage. She also had eight digs. Nicerio had a match-high 14 digs with five assists.
Setter
Catherine Feathers had an impressive night running the Gators attack, she recorded 47 assists, with nine digs an ace and three kills and distributed the ball well as SF State hit .353 on the night.
Taylor Brownlee was outstanding, recording 13 kills on 33 swings for a .333 attack percentage. The Gators middles of
Samantha Krakower and
Christine Johnson were active tonight on the attack, recording seven and six kills respectively. Freshman
Chantelle Williams tallied eight kills.
In the opening set the Gators took the momentum early. The Gators pounded out 19 kills on 41 swings with a six errors to hit. 317. Defensively, they held Cal State San Marcos (6-23/3-17 CCAA) to just nine kills and a .188 attack percentage. Brownlee was on fire in the opening set, recording seven kills on 10 swings with just one error.
In the second frame, SF State carried over all the momentum from the first set. The Cougars recorded just seven kills while hitting .125. The Gators countered with a match-high .424 attack percentage, tallying 18 kills on 33 swings with just four attack errors. Redshirt freshman
Willa Henderson made her collegiate debut towards the end of the set, and put the frame away with her first kill on her first attempt.
In the third and final set, the Cougars put up a fight. The set featured nine ties and three lead changes. An attack error by the Gators gave the Cougars a three point lead, 14-11, midway through the set. A kill by Brownlee put the Gators out front for good, 21-20 forcing a timeout by Cal State San Marcos. Shortly after that the Gators took the set and the match on the sixth attack error of the set from the Cougars.
The Gators return to action on Thursday, Nov. 19 when they play in the first round of the CCAA Tournament at the Rimac Arena in La Jolla, Calif.
