Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | SF State Sports Information

Three Point Ball Does @SFState_WBB In

ARCATA, Calif. – The three point basket proved to be the Achilles heel for the SF State women's basketball team on Saturday night. The Gators connected on just 5-for-24 attempts from 3-point range, meanwhile, the host Lumberjacks shot 6-for-11 from distance en-route to a 60-58 win at Lumberjack Arena.

Lauryn Catching drained a three from the right side of the arc on the Gators first offensive series to take a brief 3-2 lead.  They would go 1-for-19 for the remainder of the game before hitting three more threes in a late run attempting to cut into the Jacks lead.

SF State (3-5/1-2 CCAA) shot 33.9 percent from the floor on the night, going 20-for-59, a bulk of their offense came inside the paint, where the Gators scored 18 of their 52 points.

Three players scored in double figures for SF State, and was led by junior forward Laura Lawson who had a big night.  Lawson recorded her fourth double-double of the year, grabbing 16 rebounds and scoring 14 points.  Six of those boards came on the offensive side of the ball, SF State had 11 second chance points on the evening.  Naila Washington and Catching both added 12 points each.

Humboldt State (5-5/3-1 CCAA) also had three players in double figures and was led by guard Kiana Brown's game-high 20 points.

Humboldt State shot a very economical 40.5 percent from the floor on the evening, shooting 17-for-42.  The Jacks scored 20 points inside the paint to help stave off the Gators late run.  But the difference in the game was the Jacks sharp shooting from long range.

Humboldt State led by as much as 17 points just before half time.  SF State trailed by just four points midway through the second quarter, but a big run by the Jacks to close out the half put them out front for good.

In the second half, SF State shot much better from the floor, connecting on 14-of-31 from the field.  With the Gators down 11 late in the fourth quarter, SF State went on a furious run in an attempt to send the game into overtime.  Catching started that run draining a three from the corner to cut the deficit to eight points.

The Jacks continued to hit their free throws however, and SF State could not get any closer than the eight point deficit.  Brittaney Allison hit a rushed three from the top of the key with 13 seconds remaining, and Washington scored on a quick put-back as time expired for the final bucket of the game for SF State.

The Gators return to action in a week from today when they take on Division I cross town foe, San Francisco State at 2:00 p.m. at the War Memorial Gym.
