RENO – Whether it was the early start time, or the larger gym, the SF State women's basketball team could not find the shooting touch from 3-point range, going just 3-for-13 from beyond the arc. Overall, SF State shot just 31 percent from the floor as they fell to visiting Nevada 57-54 in their final exhibition game of the season.
SF State shot much better in the second half of today's contest, going 11-for-28, the big difference was the limited shots from long range. The Gators attempted just three, 3-point baskets after the intermission. They chose instead to feed the post players for effect 15 foot jumpers.
Leading the Gators on offense was senior
Naila Washington, who scored a team-high 15 points.
Kiara Ginwright had a solid day, she finished with eight points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Six of her eight points came after the break.
Also scoring in double figures for the Gators was
Trayona Thomas who had 11 points.
Lauryn Catching finished the game with seven points, all of them coming in the first half.
Defensively, SF State played well, holding the Division I foe to 57 points on the day, and a 39.3 shooting percentage. The Gators forced 20 turnovers, which they converted into 14 points. The real saving grace for the Gators was their tremendous free throw shooting. As a team, SF State connected on 12-for-13 from the charity stripe.
The Wolf Pack (1-8) was led by senior forward Nyasha LeSure's game-high 16 points. LeSure hit a pair of free throws 24 seconds into the Game and the Wolf Pack never looked back. UNR's largest lead was 12 points, with 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
The Gators refused to go down, however, and cut the lead to six in the closing seconds of the game, when Ginwright and Washington closed out the game with three field goals inside the paint.
SF State returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Arcata, Calif., to take on Humboldt State at 5:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Arena.
