ARCATA–  The visiting SF State Gators fell 86-71 to the Humboldt State Lumberjacks despite three players scoring in double digits in
Udun Osakue,
Andre Jones and
Bren Haley. Osakue had 27 points while Jones chipped in 13 and Haley added 12 points for the Gators.
"Udun (Osakue), Bren (Haley) and Andre (Jones) gave us great minutes tonight but we just ran out of gas on the defensive end," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "Our guys played hard this evening."
Osakue had a career night with 27 points. He was 7 of 11 from the field including going 11-for-14 from the line. The senior forward grabbed 7 rebounds and recorded four steals. Jones tied his season high with 13 points off the bench for SF State (8-10, 6-8 CCAA) going 6-for-9 from the field. Senior point guard
Bren Haley scored 12 points while tying his career high with four steals.
The Gators, who are in a three-way tie for 7
th place with Cal State L.A. and Sonoma State, also out-rebounding their hosts 27-23.
David Howard's 18 points led four players in double digits in scoring for Humboldt State (14-6, 8-6 CCAA). Thomas Witzel added 15 points off the bench for the Lumberjacks, who are tied for fifth place with Cal State San Bernardino. Allen Guei chipped in 14 points and Austin Bryan added 12 points for the hosts.
The Lumberjacks opened the game with a 7-2 lead, but SF State went on a 12-5 run to take a 14-12 lead at the 12:14 mark of the first half. A lay-up by
Andre Jones gave the Gators an 18-14 lead four minutes later.Â
Humboldt State went on a 10-0 run capped by three free throws by Austin Bryan to take a 24-18, a lead the hosts would not relinquish.Â
SF State though would not go away as
Justice Howard's jumper cut the deficit to 24-20.Â
Humboldt State finished the half outscoring the Gators 17-6 in the final six minutes of the half to take a 41-26 lead into the locker room.
The Gators came out on fire in the second half as they went on a 10-2 run capped by back to back lay-ups by Jones to cut the Lumberjack lead to 43-36 in the first three minutes of the new stanza.
Humboldt State outscored the Gators, 29-11; in the next eight minutes to take a 72-47 lead. Â SF State three times cut the Lumberjack lead to 13 with the last one coming on a
Jon McMurry lay-up with over 90 seconds left in the game.Â
The Lumberjacks finished the game outscoring their guests, 7-3 to take the CCAA contest 86-71.
SF State will continue its four-game road trip next weekend with a pair of games in the Bay Area. The Gators will travel to Seaside, Calif., on Friday, February 6 for a 7:30 pm PST scheduled tip-off with Cal State Monterey Bay. SF State defeated the Otters on 73-58 on January 3 in San Francisco. The Gators will then travel across the Bay for a 7:30pm scheduled contest with Cal State East Bay in Hayward on Saturday, February 7. SF State defeated Cal State East Bay 70-57 on January 2 in San Francisco.
SF State will return home on Friday, February 13 to host UC San Diego. That game will be "Gold Rush" as the first 500 SF State students will receive free pizza and gold t-shirts as all Gator fans are encourage to wear gold to the game. The contest will also be broadcast live on Comcast Hometown Network. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm with the women's game to begin at 5:30pm.Â
