SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's basketball team held an 11 point lead heading into the break after brilliant first half. Ultimately, the adjustments made by Cal Poly Pomona after the intermission cooled off the Gators strong inside game and Broncos came back to win 74-67.
The Gators (0-22/0-18 CCAA) closed out the weekend playing back-to-back excellent games. In the opening half SF State led by as much as 13, with under two minutes to play.
Keying the Gators hot start was their shooting performance in the first half. SF State connected on 48.5 percent going 16-for-33 from the floor. They even outscored the much larger Broncos in the paint 12-10.
Senior forward
Michelle Sutton had an all-around excellent game. She finished the night with 14 points, shooting 6-for-15 from the field, she also grabbed four rebounds, dished out four assists and tallied three steals.
Joining Sutton in double figures was
Brittaney Allison who capped off a strong weekend, she finished with 17, going 8-for-16 from the floor.
Savannah Camp was the other Gator in double figures, she finished the night with 15 points, 13 coming in a fantastic opening period that saw her go 5-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-4 from three point range.
Facing Broncos (17-5/15-3 CCAA) All-American Jada Blackwell, the Gators did an exceptional job rebounding, that led to 13 second chance points, 11 of those coming in the first half.
In the first half the Gator scored first and opened up the game on a 10-3 run. With Sutton scoring six of those 10. Defensively, the Gators limited the Broncos to 1-for-6 shooting early. They finished that half going 10-for-22 from the floor.
In the second half the size of Blackwell was too much for the Gators, who tallied a double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Putting her on the free throw line did no good as she was 10-for-10 from the charity stripe including an 8-for-8 stretch in the second half.
Helping slow down the Gators offense was the halftime adjustment made by the Broncos who shifted from a man to man defense in the first half to a zone. The zone helped keep Sutton from driving into the lane forcing the Gators to take deeper shots. From three point range in the second half the Gators were just 1-for-9. Offsetting the troubled from deep was the play from center
Taylor Ingraham who tied her career-high with eight points, six coming after the break.
The Broncos started the second half on an 18-8 run following culminating in a Backwell layup with 12:56 left in the game. CPP didn't take their first lead of the game until 12:25 following a pair of made free throws. With 1:27 left in the game Blackwell converted on a pair of free throws giving the Broncos their largest lead of the night, seven points, which they held onto for the remainder of the game.
The Gators return to action on Friday, February 20 when they host Cal State Stanislaus. Tip off for that game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
