SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's basketball team shot the lights out of the gym Friday night in front of a rowdy crowd, unfortunately the size of UC San Diego proved to be too much, as the Gators lost to the visiting Tritons 76-65 in one of the best all-around games of the season for SF State.
In the opening half the Gators (0-21/0-17 CCAA) connected on 48.4 percent of their shots, going 15-for-31 from the field. That percentage would have been a season-best, except SF State followed that up hitting 60.0 percent of their shots in the second half. On the night, the Gators shot 27-for-51 on the evening, for a season-high 52.9 percent from the floor. For just the second time all season the Gators outshot their opponents.
Helping aid the Gators in the impressive night from the field, was the improved shot selection. The Gators attempted 13 three point baskets, but connected on six of them in the opening period. The good looks from deep were aided by the strong interior play as the Gator scored 12 points in the paint.
Senior forward
Michelle Sutton helped get the Gators on the right track offensively, she finished the night, tying her career-high with 17 points. She had 11 in the first half going 4-for-8 with a series of acrobatic drives into the key and finishing with layups.
With 10 seconds left in the half, Sutton hit a three point bucket to briefly give the Gators a four point lead, before the Triton's Farrah Shokoor tipped in an errant shot as the buzzer expired to give SF State a two point advantage at the intermission.
Out of the break the height advantage of the Tritons (12-10/11-6 CCAA) really showed. UCSD outscored the Gators 39-27 in the second half. They scored 20 points in the paint and 16 points off turnovers. On the glass UC San Diego outrebounded the Gators 32-23 and had six players finish with 10 or more points. Leading the team was McKennan Bertsch who scored 14 points.
Also having an outstanding night for the Gators was
Brittaney Allison, who scored 16 points,
Savannah Camp added 10.
Jasmine Flanagan had seven points with eight assists. Senior center
Liz Wyrsch recorded a career-high with nine points.
The Gators will return to action tomorrow night when they host Cal Poly Pomona, tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
