SAN FRANCISCO – The Fresno Pacific swept this afternoon's non-conference doubleheader from the SF State Gators 11-6 and 5-0 at SF State's Maloney Field.
Jacob Lopez drove in two of the Gators' six runs while
Joseph Chedid scored twice in game one.
Nick Jackson also had two hits in the opener.
The Sunbirds (9-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Gators'
Joseph Chedid scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by
Danny Souza. Fresno Pacific took a 3-1 lead on a two-run double by Travis Beck in the top of the third. The Sunbirds increased their lead to 6-1 with a two-run fourth inning.
SF State (2-8) cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Nick Jackson had a lead-off single, he went to second on a sacrifice by
Jacob Lopez. Jackson scored on a
Chad Thurston double.
The Sunbirds took a 10-2 lead with a five-run sixth inning with Beck's grand slam home run capping the scoring for the guests.
The Gators did not cave in as they scored four in the eighth.
Matt Vera had a one-out single and went to second on Chedid's walk.
Nazareth Thibodeaux had a pinch-hit single to drive in Vera.
Fernando Escobar walked for Jackson, who drove in Chedid with the second run of the inning. Lopez then hit a two-run double to cut the Sunbird lead to 10-6.
Fresno Pacific added an insurance run in the ninth to make the final 11-6. Wilson Ashford (2-0) recorded the win for the guests while
Ryan Bohnet picked the loss for SF State falling to 0-2.
Lopez drove in two runs while Chedid scored twice.
In the night cap, the Sunbirds scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. They added a run in the fifth on a single by Michael Tittle and another run in the seventh on a run scoring single by Nate Case to take the 5-0 series finale.
Drew Merlo (1-0) picked up the win for Fresno Pacific, pitching a complete game, giving up three hits and striking out four.
Peter Reyes (1-2) recorded the loss for SF State while Lopez, Thurston and Lindsay each had the Gators' three hits.
SF State will return to the diamond this Friday, February 27 at 2pm as the Gators will begin a four-game conference series with Cal State L.A. for a single nine-inning game at Maloney Field.
