@SFState_WBB Falls To Golden Eagles To Begin Final Road Trip

LOS ANGELES – The SF State women's basketball team could not repeat the magic from a week ago, as the Gators fell to host Cal State L.A. 79-59 Friday evening at the Eagles Nest.  The Golden Eagles owned the paint, outscoring the Gators 38-10 inside the key.

Six days after the first win of the season, the Gators (1-24/1-20 CCAA) could not maintain their winning ways.  SF State had a strong second half shooting wise, but the halftime deficit was too much, as the Gators entered the break trailing 40-27.

The Gators had two players in double figures led by junior Jasmine Flanagan and freshman Savannah Camp's 11 points.  SF State did not have a player in double figures until midway through the second half.  SF State did have plenty of players contribute, as seven players scored seven or more points on the night.

Cal State L.A. (10-15/9-12 CCAA) had four players in double figures and was led by Ali Orlich's 13 points.  Franeka Hall recorded a double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

In the opening half the Gators shot just 23.5 percent from the floor going 8-for-34 from the field and 3-for-14 from 3-point range.  The Golden Eagles countered shooting 48.5 percent from the floor going 16-for-33.  CSULA owned the paint in the opening half, outscoring the Gators 22-8 in the first period.

Cal State L.A. drew first blood and never relinquished the lead, going on a 6-0 run to start the game.  CSULA pushed that lead to 19-7 at the 11:35 mark.  The Gators did their part, closing the gap to six points, 31-24, after Flanagan hit both free throws with 4:22 in the opening half.

The Golden Eagles closed out the half with a 40-27 halftime lead.  Out of the break the Gators scored first on a 3-point bucket by Camp.  SF State shot much better after the intermission shooting 34.4 percent from the field going 11-for-32 and was better from long range, shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point range going 6-for-14.

In the end the Golden Eagles size advantage in the paint could not be ignored.  CSULA owned a commanding 61-22 advantage in the rebound category.

The Gators will wrap up the 2014-15 campaign tomorrow night when SF State takes on Cal State Dominguez Hills.  Tip-of is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start time.
