SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Cal State Stanislaus Warriors scored two runs in the top of the 11
th inning to defeat the SF State Gators 7-5 in a three-hour 11-inning game at SF State's Maloney Field. Patrick Mulry had a two-out RBI single that scored Marcus Mastrobuoni with what proved to be the game-winning run for the Warriors.
Chad Thurston had three of the Gators' 12 hits with
Jacob Lopez driving in two of the hosts' five runs.
The Gators (10-13, 9-8 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in their half of the first inning.
Fernando Escobar and
Mark Lindsay had back to back one-out singles. Lindsay advanced to second on a wild pitch. Escobar scored on a ground-out by
Bryce Cherry. With two outs and the count 1-0,
Matt Vera drove in Lindsay with a single up the middle.
Cal State Stanislaus cut the Gator lead in half on Scott Stetson's run scoring ground out that brought in James Heller in the Warrior third. Heller had a lead-off single, stole second and advanced to third on Nick Ippolito sacrifice.
Mastrobuoni tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth when he scored on a one-out single by Skippy Ferreria after leading off the Warrior fourth with a double. The Warriors took the lead with a two-run fifth inning capped by a two-out RBI double by Ferreria that brought in Michael Chavarria to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.
SF State tied the game at 4-4 with at two-run seventh inning.
Andrew Breen had a one-out single up the middle and went to third on a double down the left field line by
Nick Jackson. With one out and the count 1-1, Lopez tied the game with a single to right field which brought in both Breen and Jackson.
Cal State Stanislaus (8-18, 3-13 CCAA) retook the lead in the eighth on two-out single by Stevie Robinson which brought in Nick Molina to give the guests a 5-4 lead. Molina had a lead-off single and went to second when Christian Kahler was hit by a pitch.
The Gators tied the game in their half of the eighth. Cherry had a lead-off double down the right field line and went to third on a single by Thurston. He scored on a double play ground out by Vera. Aaron Godinez induced the next Gator to strikeout to keep the game tied at 5.
SF State had a chance in the 10
th as Lindsay had a one-out walk, but Godinez induced an inning ending double play.
The Warriors scored twice in their half of the eleventh. Mastrobuoni, who finished 3 for 6 with two runs scored, had a lead-off single. He went to second on a single by Chavarria. With two outs, Mulry singled to right field to bring in Mastrobuoni with the go-ahead run. Still with two outs, Ippolito had an infield single that brought in Chavarria with an insurance run.
Thurston had a lead-off single in the eleventh for the Gators. The next Gator batter flew out to right and Godinez preserved the 7-5 Warrior win with a game-ending double play. Godinez (2-1) recorded the win in relief for the Warriors, pitching four innings of three hit ball, giving up one run, striking out two and walking one. Chris Senn had the no-decision in the start for the Warriors, pitching 6.1 innings of 7-hit ball, giving up three runs.
The Warriors pounded out 19 hits led by Ferreria's four-for-six day. Mastrobuoni and Heller each had three hits also for the visitors.
Cory Davis (1-1) picked up the loss in relief for SF State, pitching four innings, giving up 7 hits and two runs, striking out one and walking one.
Nolan Sheridan recorded the no-decision in the start for the Gators, pitching 7 innings, giving up 12 hits and five runs, striking out four and walking one. Thurston had three hits while Escobar and Lindsay each had two for SF State, who is in fifth place two games behind Cal State L.A., who is in fourth.
The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1pm in Turlock, Calif., for a doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus' Warrior Field. The series will conclude with a 1pm starting nine-inning game this Sunday, March 29 at SF State's Maloney Field.
