TURLOCK – The SF State softball team fell 7-2 in the finale of the Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the hands of host Cal State Stanislaus. The Gators scored first but a five run inning by the Warriors proved to be too much to overcome.
The Gators (8-26) collected seven hits on the day, netting a pair of runs. Outfielder
Chelsea Brent went 2-for-4 at the plate, she wraps up the weekend swinging a very hot bat, going 8-for-19 with four runs scored, two runs driven in and two doubles. She upped her average to .311 over the weekend.
Making her first career start was freshman
Lindsey Cassidy (0-1). Cassidy made quick work of the Warriors (11-22) in the bottom of the first, but ran into trouble in the second and could not make it out of the third. Cassidy went 2.0 plus innings, surrendering seven hits, seven runs, five earned, with two walks and a strike out.
Aryn Guzman took the ball in the bottom of the third and pitched beautifully. She threw four scoreless frames, scattering a pair of hits with a walk, while striking out five.
SF State struck first, scoring a run in the top of the second.
Marisa Andrade started the inning with a single to left field. She moved up 60 feet on the sacrifice bunt by
Tori Bellin. Andrade came around to score on the double to lefty field by Guzman.
Five hits plated five runs in the home half of the second, giving the Warriors a 5-1 lead. They added two more in the third, scoring on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.
SF State scored another run in the top of the fifth. Brent led off the inning with a double to left field. She eventually scored on the sacrifice fly off the bat of
Lucy Fernandez.
Earning the win for the Warriors was starter Jessica Varady (7-7). Varady went the distance throwing 7.0 complete, scattering seven hits, two runs, with a walk and four strike outs.
The Gators will return to Turlock next weekend when the Gators resume CCAA play, taking on Cal State Stanislaus in a four-game series. The series begins Friday, April 3 with game one of the double header scheduled for 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
