HAYWARD – The SF State baseball team got the series off on a great start on Friday, winning game one of the split home and away series, 6-3 Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field. Helping get the Gators into the win column was the impressive pitching performance by
Nolan Sheridan who threw a seven hit, complete game.
SF State (5-10/4-5 CCAA) scored four runs in the top of the first inning to give Sheridan (2-3) all the support he would need.
Jacob Lopez led off the inning with a triple down the right field line jumping all over a 1-1 fast ball. He scored on the single up the middle off the bat of
Fernando Escobar, who moved to third on the base-hit through the right side by
Mark Lindsay. Escobar scored on the sacrifice fly by
Bryce Cherry, which also moved Lindsey up 90 feet to second.
With one out and two runs already in,
Garrett Heisinger doubled to right center that one hopped the fence, scoring Lindsey and moving
Ryan Burke to third. Burke reached earlier after getting hit by a pitch. Burke eventually scored on ground ball to second hit by
Matt Vera.
The Pioneers (4-9/1-8 CCAA) scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first before Sheridan had a chance to settle in. A two-out, two-run home run by the Pioneers designated hitter cut the lead in half. But that was it for the Pioneers who were held scoreless for five innings before scoring a run in the seventh.
Sheridan's line for the day was 9.0 innings pitched, scattering seven hits, three runs, two earned, with no walks and no strike outs. His counterpart, CSUEB starter Michael Pope (0-3) went seven complete in the losing effort. He surrendered six hits, six runs, five earned with four walks and three strike outs.
Lopez, Lindsay and center fielder
Nick Jackson all collected multiple hits on the day. Jackson was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Lopez and Cherry also drove in a run.
The Gators and Pioneers will switch locations for tomorrow's double header, as the Gators play host to CSUEB. Game one is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. with the second game slated for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
