No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona Takes Series Opener from @SFState_BASE

SAN FRANCISCO – Behind the pitching of starter Ryan Olson (9-0), the 19th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos defeated the SF State Gators 8-1 in the first game of this weekend's conference four-game series at The Swamp at Maloney Field.  The Broncos had a five-run sixth inning that propelled them to the series opener victory. 

Christian Kelley walked to lead off the Bronco third, he advanced to second on a single by Kyle Garlick.  Nick Cooksey had a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.  With one out and the bases loaded, Kelley scored when Matt Munoz reached on a fielder's choice.  Ryan Webberley hit a two-out single to left field to bring in Garlick to double the Bronco lead to 2-0.  The Broncos (34-13, 26-11 CCAA) added an insurance run in the fourth on a run scoring single by Nicholas Bruno which scored Mike Philp.

Cal Poly Pomona, who is first in the CCAA and also in the NCAA Division II West Regional Rankings, broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning.  Webberley's third home run of the season started the inning for the Broncos, who had five hits in the inning as they increased their lead to 8-0.

SF State's Danny Souza scored the Gators' run in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Souza had a lead-off walk, went to second on a balk.  He then advanced to third on a ground out by Garrett Heisinger and scored on a sacrifice fly by Will Hein

Grant Vogenthaler came on in relief in the seventh innings and pitched three scoreless innings, giving up no hits and striking out two for the Gators. Peter Reyes (3-7) recorded the loss in the start for the Gators pitching 5.1 innings, giving up 11 hits and 8 runs (seven earned), striking out three and walking two.  Shane Martin pitched 0.2 innings of relief, giving up one hit and walking one.

Olson pitched six scoreless innings for the Broncos, giving up just two hits, walking one and striking out six.  Zach Williams pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit, striking out two and walking one.  Erik Trask came on in the ninth, giving up one run on no hits, while walking one.

The Broncos had 12 hits with three player with two hits apiece in Garlick, Webberley and Bruno. Fernando Escobar had two of the Gators' three hits on the day.

SF State (18-27, 16-21 CCAA) will continue its four-game series with the Broncos tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader at The Swamp at Maloney Field.  The two teams will conclude the four-game series this Sunday, May 3 with a 11am starting single game.  Prior to the game at 10:40am, the Gators will recognize their 9 seniors in Cory Davis, Fernando Escobar, Will Hein, Garrett Heisinger, Mark Lindsay, Ryan Romero, Danny Souza, Preston Tarter and Matt Vera
