SAN FRANCISCO –  The 19th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos swept this afternoon's doubleheader from the SF State Gators 8-5 and 5-1 at The Swamp at Maloney Field.  Cody Ponce pitched a three-hit complete game victory in the night cap while Michael Koval pitched 5.2 innings of relief in the opener to key the sweep for the Broncos.

Game One
The Broncos (36-13, 28-11 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead in the opener as the first four batters reached on singles or walks.  Christian Kelley had a lead-off single went to second on a walk to Kyle Garlick.  He scored on a single by Nick Cooksey.  Still with no outs, Michael Zidek singled home Garlick.  Cooksey scored on a fielder's choice ground out to third by Ryan Webberley as the Broncos took a 3-0 lead.

SF State had a chance to break into the scoring column in its half of the first inning.  Nick Jackson reached on a two-base error and then with one out, Mark Lindsay reached on a throwing to put runners at the corners.  The Broncos' starter, Max Bethell, induced an inning ending double play to keep the score Cal Poly Pomona 3, SF State 0.

The guests added two more runs in the second and one in the third to take a 6-0 lead.  SF State cut the Bronco lead to 6-1 when Jackson reached on a one-out triple and scored on a ground out by Matt Vera.

The Gators made it interesting in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Garrett Heisinger led off the inning reaching on an error.  He went to second when Ryan Burke walked.  Jacob Lopez then loaded the bases as he reached on another Bronco error when he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Joseph Chedid then drove home Heisinger with a single through the left side.  Still with no outs and the bases loaded, Danny Souza reached on a fielder's choice to second but the Broncos threw the ball away which both Burke and Lopez scored on to cut the deficit to 6-4.  Andrew Breen had a one-out single to put runners on first and third for Jackson, who had a bunt single which brought in Souza with the inning's fourth run and cut the Bronco lead to 6-5.  Koval came in to relieve Bethel and induced an inning ending double play.

Cal Poly Pomona added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning.  Webberley had a two-out single and scored on a double by Mike Philp.  Nicholas Bruno then brought home Philp with a run scoring single to right field to increase the Bronco lead to 8-5, which ended up being the final of game one.

Nolan Sheridan (3-6) recorded the loss for the Gators as he pitched 8 innings, giving up 12 hits, 8 runs (seven earned), striking out two and walking one.  After the first three innings, Sheridan pitched four scoreless innings until the eighth when he gave up two runs.  Matthew Hernandez pitched a scoreless ninth while striking out one batter. Jackson had two of the Gators' five with his second triple of the season.  He also scored a run and drove home a run.

Koval (3-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up one hit, walking three and striking out 6.  Max Bethell had the no-decision, pitching 3.1 innings of four-hit ball, giving up 5 runs (one earned), striking out four and walking two.  Four Broncos had two hits apiece in Kelley, Cooksey, Zidek and Philp with Kelley scoring twice for the victors.

Game Two
In the night cap, Cody Ponce (5-2) pitched a three-hit complete game en route to the victory.  He struck out 8 batters while walking just one.
Webberley had a lead-off double in the Broncos' second inning.  He scored on a single up the middle by Philp.  Bruno then walked to put Broncos on first and second.  Jacob Bernardy reached on a fielder's choice bunt back to Ryan Bohnet, who threw out Webberley at third.  Kelley hit a one-out single through the left side to bring in Bruno.  Then Cooksey hit a two-out single to bring in Bernardy with the Broncos' third run.

Cal Poly Pomona added an insurance run in the third on a two-out single by Bernardy which scored Matt Munoz.  Munoz led off the inning reaching base on an error and came around to score on Bernardy's single.

SF State (18-29, 16-23 CCAA) scored its run in the bottom of the third.  Connor Fraser had a one-out single to left field.  He advanced to second on a two-out single by Jackson.  Fraser scored on a two-out single by Fernando Escobar to cut the Gator deficit to 4-1.

The Broncos increased their lead to 5-1 on a two-out single by Webberley in the seventh which scored Zidek.  Ponce shut down the Gators in the seventh as he preserved the complete game victory.

Ryan Bohnet (3-6) picked up the loss in the start for SF State, pitching 5 innings, giving up 8 hits and four runs (three earned), striking out two and walking two. Ryan Romero pitched two innings of relief, giving up one hit and one unearned run and striking out one.
