SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State women's soccer team won its 2015 home opener this afternoon by defeating the visiting Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets 2-1 this afternoon at Cox Stadium.
Hannah Mikles scored the game-winning goal in the 41
st minute off a corner kick from
Kelsey Wetzstein as the Gators improved to 1-2.
The Gators outshot the Yellowjackets 16-15 including 9-5 in shots on goal attempt while each team recorded four corner kicks.
Cassie Stansberry had the Gators' first shot attempt stopped by the Yellowjacket defense in the fourth minute, which was the only shot attempt until the 34
th minute of the first half. The Gators took the 1-0 as the
YellowJackets scored an own goal after a free kick from the Gators'
Brittany Oldham.
It looked like the YellowJackets were going to tie the match at 1-1 in the 11
th minute, but
Karin Nordin recorded one of her four saves on the day by stopping Jessica Spang's shot.
The Gators had several chances to double its lead including at the 30
th minute, when Oldham's shot was stopped by MSUB's Lili Delgadillo. Then at the 41
st minute, the hosts doubled its lead as
Hannah Mikles connected on her first goal as a Gator off a corner kick by
Kelsey Wetzstein.
The guests' Elizabeth Howard had a chance to cut into the Gator lead but her shot sailed high as the match went into the halftime with a SF State 2-0 lead.
Midway through the second half, the Gators had a chance to increase their lead to 3-0 but
Kimber Lohman's shot hit the post in the 64
th minute.
At the 80
th minute, it looked as the hosts were going to take a 3-0 lead but the YellowJackets' defense stopped Oldham's and
Bianca Lowe's attempts from going into the back of the net.
Montana State-Billings (1-1-1) cut into the Gator lead in the 83rd minute when Alycia Wright connected on her second goal off a missed shot by Jessica Spang .The guests had one more chance but Wright's shot sailed wide as the Gators held on for the 2-1 victory. Nordin had four saves in goal for the Gators while Lili Delgadillo had five saves in goal for the guests.
SF State will return to the pitch this Saturday at noon, when the Gators host Concordia (Ore.) in a non-conference match at Cox Stadium.
