SAN FRANCISCO – Twice in her career senior outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark has reached the 20 kill plateau, tonight she did one better, tallying a career-best 21 kills while picking up 17 digs for her first double-double of the year. Unfortunately the tremendous effort was not enough as Dominican defeated SF State 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
The Gators (2-5) looked strong after the intermission, however uneven play in the first two sets had them in a 0-2 hole. The Gators attack resulted in just 17 kills, but had 16 errors through the first two frames. Meanwhile, Dominican (3-3) was very efficient tallying 27 kills with just five errors in the first two periods.
In the first and second set, Clark was solid, recording six of her 21 kills. After the break she was even stronger. She recorded six kills in the third, none bigger than her fourth and fifth kills of the set that tied the frame up at 18 and again at 19. In the fourth and final set she was even better, recording nine kills on the set.
Also having a solid night for the Gators was the young trio of
Samantha Krakower,
Chantelle Williams, and
Marisa Rojo. Krakower finished the night with an efficient line of seven kills on 16 swings with zero errors for a .438 attack percentage. For good measure she also added an assist, three digs, and two block assists.
Williams finished with seven kills and four digs, while Rojo backed up her career-night last night with six kills today on a career-high 37 attempts, she also recorded a career-high eight digs. All of this coming off the bench midway through the second set.
In the third set with the frame tied at 19 an attack error by the Penguins put SF State out front 20-19, the Gators recorded back-to-back service aces by
Catherine Feathers to take the 23-20 lead. Krakower put the set away with a huge kill down the middle.
Feathers finished the night with a career-high 32 assists, while adding 14 digs and the two aces for her second triple double of the year.
Jessica Nicerio matched Clark's team-high with 17 digs while adding a pair of assists and an ace.
In the fourth and final set the Gators lead 22-20 following a kill by Clark, her last of the evening. SF State looked poised to send the match to a fifth and final set. Unfortunately, out of a Dominican timeout, the Penguins rallied, going on a 4-1 run to take the set and the match.
SF State returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 when the Gators travel to Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena in Turlock, Calif., to take on Stanislaus State in their CCAA opener.
