SAN RAFAEL–   After starting the season 0-2, the SF State Gators' women's soccer won their third straight match by defeating the Dominican (Calif.) Penguins 4-1 this afternoon in San Rafael.  Kelsey Wetzstein had a goal and an assist while Danielle Vidal assisted on two of the Gators' goals as SF State improved to 3-2.

Wetzstein had a chance to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, but her shot sailed high over the net.  Nine seconds later, Wetzstein assisted on the Gators' first goal of the match as Isabella Nazario connected on a ball from the junior midfielder for her first goal in the purple and gold.

Dominican (0-3-1) came right down the pitch after the Gator goal and tied the match on Maria Meza's goal off a pass from Bailey Kiser in the 12^th minute. SF State had two chances to take the lead back but the Penguin defense stopped Vanesa Penuna's shot on goal attempt along with Vidal's attempt in the 16^th minute.

The Gators took the lead for good in the 23^rd minute as Wetzstein connected on a ball from Vidal for what proved bo the game-winner. SF State continued their offensive attack as the Gators increased their lead to 3-1 on a goal by Autumn Fox in the 30^th minute off a ball from Vidal for her second goal of the season. Two minutes later, SF State increased its lead to 4-1 on a goal by Kayleen Belda off a throw-in by Hanna Ghamari in the 32d minute.

The Penguins had a chance to cut into the Gator lead in the 33^rd minute, but SF State's defense stopped Lauren Gollnick's shot from going into the back of the net as the visitors took a 4-1 lead into halftime. 

SF State had a couple more chances of increasing its lead, but the Penguins Sylvanna Isles came up with four saves as the Gators took the 4-1 non-conference win.

Karin Nordin recorded three saves in goal for the visitors in the first half while Ariana Wesley saw action in 36 minutes and Alannah John played in the final eight minutes in goal for SF State.

The Gators outshot the Penguins 17-5 including 8-1 in the second half.  They also held a 5-3 corner kick advantage.  Islas had four saves in goal for the hosts. 

The Gators will begin CCAA play this Friday, September 18^th at 7:00pm in Turlock, Calif., for a showdown with the Stanislaus State Warriors.
