@SFState_WVB Blasts Pioneers In Four Sets

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State volleyball team was relentless on the attack on Saturday evening, recording a season-high 61 kills as the Gators defeated visiting Cal State East Bay in four sets, 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, and 25-17, at the Main Gymnasium at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.

The Gators (3-6/1-1 CCAA) put on a clinic running an efficient attack.  SF State hit a season-high .287, while only hitting into 15 attack errors, a season-best 3.75 attack errors per set. Meanwhile, the defensive trio of Arianna Cruz, Krista Forte, and Jessica Nicerio held the Pioneers (2-8/0-2 CCAA) to just a .220 attack percentage, while picking up a season-high 77 digs.

Jaclyn Clark was on fire for the Gators, for the second time this season she eclipsed the 20 kill mark, setting a new career-high with 24 kills, on 51 swings for an impressive .392 attack percentage.  After the first two sets, Clark had 12 kills on just 26 attempts.  She also picked up 15 digs for her third double-double of the season

Also having a big night on the attack was junior outside hitter Taylor Brownlee.  Brownlee also collected a season-high on the night, with 14 kills on 41 swings for a .244 attack percentage.  Brownlee's big contribution came in the third and fourth set where she recorded nine of her 14 kills.  In the final set alone she tallied five kills on 10 swings without an error.

Setter Linda Aerne had a career night, she tallied 55 assists with five digs and a service ace.  Forte had 15 digs with four service aces, while Cruz tallied a career-high 21 digs with two assists and two service aces.  Nicerio finished the night with 12 digs and two assists. 

Middle blocker Samantha Krakower also had a tremendous performance for the Gators.  She finished with 12 kills on 28 swings without an error for a .429 attack percentage, she also had two service aces and 1.5 blocks.

In the first two sets it was all SF State.  The Gators hit .333 and .323 collectively in the first two frames.  In the second set the Gators raced out an 8-0 lead.  Heading into the intermission, with the Gators up 2-0, SF State had hit into just five attack errors.

Out of the break the Pioneers played their best volleyball of the night.  Cal State East Bay hit .406 in the third set, with 15 kills on 32 swings with just two errors.  In the fourth set the Pioneers seemed poised to send the match to a fifth and final set.

With the score 13-9 in the favor of the visiting team, the Gators called a timeout and immediately turned things around.  SF State closed out the set on a 16-4 run to take the set 25-17.

The Gators return to action on Tuesday when they host Chico State at 7:00 p.m. at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
