SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State Gators used a strong second half as they scored four unanswered goals to defeat the visiting Holy Names University Hawks 5-1 this afternoon in their final non-conference match of the season. The Gators have not lost starting the season 0-2 to improve to 5-2-1 on the season.
SF State outshot its visitors 23-11 including 12-6 in shots on goal while holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Karin Nordin recorded three saves in the first 74 minutes while
Arianna Wesley had two saves in goal for the Gators in the final 16 minutes. Tiana Miyashiro posted five saves in the first half for the Hawks and Jenni Dooley had two saves in the final 45 minutes.
SF State took a 1-0 lead in the 14
th minute when
Danielle Vidal scored her first goal of the season off a cross from
Vanessa Penuna. It looked like the Gators were going to double their lead, but
Jada Williams shot was stopped by Miyashiro in the 15
th minute. The score remained 1-0 Gators until the 43
rd minute when Gabriela Valle's shot sailed over the Gators goalkeeper's head to tie the match at 1-1.
Holy Names (2-2-0) had a chance to tie the match in the closing minutes of the half, but Nordin made one of her three saves to send the match into the half tied at 1-1.
The Gators came out on fire in the second half as in the 49
th minute,
Kayleen Belda scored her third goal off a missed shot by Vidal off a ball form
Hanna Ghamari to give SF State a 2-1 lead. SF State continued its offensive onslaught in the 54
th minute as Penuna sailed a ball over the Hawks' goalkeepers head into the net to give the Gators a 3-1 lead.
Autumn Fox connected on her third goal of the season as she connected on a cross from
Bianca Lowe in the 69
th minute as SF State increased its lead to 4-1. Then four minutes later,
Shannon Rauschnot scored her first goal of the season off a cross from
Sabrina Corpus to make the final 5-1 Gators.
SF State will return to the pitch this Sunday afternoon at 2pm for a CCAA match-up with the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters in Seaside, Calif. After this weekend, the Gators will return for a two-game home stand on October 2 and 4. They will host Sonoma State at 12:30pm on Oct. 2 and Humboldt State on Oct. 4 at 11:30am.
