SAN FRANCISCO– The SF State Gators bounced back from their overtime loss with Cal State East Bay last night with an 85-79 victory over the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this evening at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Gators had four players in double digits led by
Treaven Duffy's 16 points.
Besides Duffy's 16 points,
Warren Jackson chipped in 15 points,
Jon McMurry added 14 points and
Floyd Wormley scored 13 points for the victors.
SF State (10-7, 4-7 CCAA) shot 52.5% from the field including 46.2% from three-point land with 15 assists on its 31 baskets. The Gators also out-rebounded the Otters 36-32 with Duffy's 8 leading the way. Their bench outscored the Otters' bench 35-21 and also had a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Evan Zeller had a game high 21 points for the Otters with Ryan Nitz scoring 20 points and Alex Fertiz chipping in 13 points.
The Gators jumped out to a 28-17 lead mid-way through the first half. They increased that lead to 47-31 on a three by McMurry with less than four minutes left in the first stanza. Cal State Monterey finished the half outscoring the Gators 12-5 to cut the lead to 52-43 heading into the locker room.
SF State went on a 7-2 run capped by a Duffy lay-up off an assist from
Andre Jones to increase its lead back to double digits (59-45) in the first four minutes of the new half. A
Derrick Brown free throw increased the Gators lead to 67-52 at the 14:11 mark, but the Otters would not go away.
The visitors cut the Gator lead to 71-64 on a jumper by Fertig at the 8:31 mark, but SF State increased the lead back to double digits on a Duffy lay-up (76-66) with just 4:41 left in the game.
Cal State Monterey Bay scored the next four points to cut the Gator deficit to six (76-70), but once again SF State scored the next four points to take an 80-70 lead with 80 seconds on the clock.
The Gators went 7 for 10 from the line down the stretch including two clinching free throws by Wormley in the final seconds to make the final 85-79.
SF State will return to the court on January 29 and 30 for two CCAA road games the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Gators will first face Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson on January 29. Then the next night, January 30, will travel to Los Angeles for a game with Cal State L.A. Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 7:30pm PST.
