SANTA CRUZ--- The San Francisco State Gators posted their sixth shutout this season with a 2-0 road non-conference win over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. With the win, the Gators improve to 7-6-2 heading into their final two home matches of the regular season this Thursday and Saturday.
Just 13 minutes into the match,
Richard Leon connected on a pass from
Francisco Saucedo and
Ranier Plantinos to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead. The lead stayed 1-0 Gators until the 66
th minute, when
Ashley Watson scored an unassisted goal for his third goal of the season.
The Gators outshot their hosts 22-9 including 17-5 in the second half. They also held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
San Francisco State will return home this Thursday and Saturday, October 27 and 29 for the final time this regular season. The Gators will host Cal State East Bay at 3pm this Thursday and Stanislaus State this Saturday at 2pm. Prior to the match on Saturday, the Gators will recognize their four seniors.
LUCKY NUMBER 7: Richard Leon scored his team leading 7
th goal of the season and fourth game-winning goal of the season in the 14
th minute off a cross from
Francisco Saucedo and
Ranier Plantinos. This was Plantinos' third assist of the season and Saucedo's second.
6TH SHUTOUT: The Gators' defense recorded their sixth shutout of the season this afternoon with Emmanuell Jimenez posting three saves en route to his 5.5 shutout.
UNASSISTED: Ashley Watson scored on what proved to be the match sealer in the 66
th minute from 15-yaurds out for his second goal of the season.
4-1: San Francisco State finished its non-conference season with a 4-1 record with its only loss a 1-0 loss to Hope International to start off the season. The Gators defeated William Jessup, Holy Names, Academy of Art and UC Santa Cruz.
FINAL TWO: The Gators will have two more matches left in the regular season this week. They will host Cal State East Bay and Stanislaus State this Thursday and Saturday, October 27 and 29 at home at 3pm and 2pm respectively.
