@SFState_MSOC and Cal State San Marcos Play To a 1-1 Double Overtime Tie

SAN FRANCISCO--- The San Francisco State Gators and the visiting Cal State San Marcos Cougars played to a 1-1 double overtime this afternoon in a CCAA match at Cox Stadium.  Richard Leon scored his team high fifth goal of the season off a missed shot by Andy Altamirano in the 9th minute for the Gators' goal.

The Gators (6-5-1, 3-4-1 CCAA) outshot their guests 21-12 including 15-8 in the second half and two overtime periods.  They also held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal while Cal State San Marcos (4-3-2, 3-1-2 CCAA) had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

San Francisco State will now go back on the road for a three-match road trip beginning with this Friday, October 14 in Arcata, Calif., for a 3pm match with the Humboldt State Lumberjacks.

MATCH NOTES:

CHANCES:  The Gators had their chances to take the victory this afternoon as they held a 21-12 shot advantage including a 10-5 shot on goal advantage.  They had two chances for the game-winner late in regulation one off the foot of Dzenet Heljo and the other off the foot of Richard Leon.  Then in the overtime periods, Francisco Saucedo, Andy Altamirano, Richard Leon, Ashley Watson, Aydan Bowers and Ranier Plantinos all had chances for the golden goal.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "The team played very well today," stated SF State head coach Javier Ayala-Hil. The effort was there, we had plenty of chances and had to settle for a tie. We are looking forward to recovering and getting ready for our matches next weekend."

STILL IN THE HUNT:  Even though the Gators went 0-1-1 this weekend, they still have a chance to make the six-team CCAA Soccer Championships, Nov. 1, 4-6.  They are in ninth place with nine points, which places them three points out of the sixth spot held by Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The top six spots are currently held by Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State L.A., UC San Diego, Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

ROLE REVERSALS:  Richard Leon and Andy Altamirano switched roles this weekend.  On Friday, Leon assisted on Altamirano's goal and then today Altamirano assisted on Leon's goal.  Leon has five goals and one assist on the season while Altamirano has two goals and two assists.

2-1:  The Gators are 2-1 in overtime matches this season as today was their first loss in overtime.  This was their first match that went into double overtime.

NOT HOME AGAIN UNTIL:  The Gators will not return home until October 27 and 29 for their final two matches of the regular season. They will host Cal State East Bay on Thursday, October 27 and Stanislaus State on Saturday, October 29.  Game times for both days are set for 3pm.
