SAN FRANCISCO – On a Sunday afternoon double header the SF State softball team could not solve the riddle of Cal State San Bernardino's starter Cassandra Williams. Williams threw back-to-back complete game shutouts to give the Coyotes the series victory over the host Gators. SF State fell in game one 7-0 before losing to the Coyotes 1-0 in a pitcher's duel.
In game one, Cal State San Bernardino (10-7/4-3 CCAA) broke a scoreless game with a four run inning in the top of the third. SF State (4-5/1-3 CCAA) starter
Lindsey Cassidy (1-1) took the loss in game one. Her line does not reflect how well she pitched. For the afternoon she went 4.2 innings, surrendering five hits, six runs, four earned with two walks and two strike outs.
In the top of the second inning she looked dominate, getting a weak line drive to short for the first out and then punched out the next two batters she faced.
What eventually ended Cassidy's afternoon was a two-run home run over the center field fence off the bat of Coyotes' catcher Jessica Brown, her second of the series.
Megan Clark came in to pitch for the Gators, throwing 2.1 innings, scattering two hits, one unearned run, with a walk and two strike outs.
Williams (9-3) was overpowering in game one. The winner of the series opener on Saturday needed just 76 pitches to record 10 strike outs, while scattering three hits with a trio of walks to earn the win in game one.
Alexis Mattos,
Aryn Guzman, and
Chelsea Brent all recorded singles for the Gators, who only got into scoring position once in game one.
In the nightcap SF State received yet another sterling pitching performance from senior
Jenny Obbema (0-3), but once again Obbema was on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel, as the Gators fell 1-0.
For the afternoon, Obbema went 7.0 complete, scattering five hits, one unearned run, with a walk and a strike out. Through three starts this season, she has allowed just five earned runs in 24.0 innings pitched, owning an ERA of 1.46. Prior to this season, Obbema only had four complete games in her career, this season she has three, in all three of her starts.
This afternoon she matched zeros with Williams all afternoon, until the Coyotes were able to break the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. CSUSB scored their lone run on a two-out double down the right field line that scored the winning run from second.
SF State had their chances late, in the sixth inning the Gators had runners in the corners with two outs in the sixth inning, but Williams recorded one of her four strike outs in game two to end the threat.
Williams went 7.0 complete in the second game, allowing three hits, with three walks and four strike outs.
Mattos went 1-for-4 in the nightcap, while catcher
Angelica Terrel was 2-for-2. Designated Player
Kasie Trezona drew a pair of walks in her first start of the season.
The Gators return to action next Friday when they travel down to Seaside, Calif. to take on No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay in a four-game series beginning at 12:00 p.m.
