SEASIDE, Calif. – The SF State softball team roared to life late in the series opener, scoring five unanswered runs to give the Gators a 5-1 win in game one of Friday's double header against host Cal State Monterey Bay. Game two was tied 5-5 going into the bottom of the 11
th when it was halted due to darkness and will resume tomorrow at noon.
"In game one we started out a little rough but really brought it together in the middle of the game," said head coach
Lisa Allen. "The offense stringed together some hits and our defense backed up
Megan Clark. In game two, the offense came on late with a big hit from
Kasie Trezona to put us on top, the team is showing good fight right now."
SF State (5-5/2-3 CCAA) received yet another starting pitching performance. This time
Megan Clark (3-1) took the ball for the Gators. For third time this season she came out the winner, holding the Otters (7-9/2-7 CCAA) to one un-earned run and eight hits over seven innings.
In her three wins this season, Clark has thrown 21.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs. Today, after the Otters struck first, she was nasty, limiting Cal State Monterey Bay to five hits after the final five innings.
When a baserunner did reach, the Gators defense, though shaky at times today, turned a double play to kill the rally. The Gators defense recorded three errors in the first game, two coming in the first inning that led to CSUMB's lone run. However, the Gators defense also turned three double plays, none bigger than a game ending twin killing by
Kayli Shaw, who caught a line drive and quickly threw out the runner at first to end the game with the bases loaded.
Early on in the contest, the Gators batters could not figure out the riddle of Otters' starter Tori Pierucci (4-4). Pierucci no-hit the Gatos through four innings before
Angelica Terrel smashed a single down the line to lead off the top of the fifth inning.
Later that inning the Gators managed to tie the game up on a one out double to right center by
Marisa Andrade that scored
Chelsea Brent all the way from first. Brent reached one batter earlier on a single through the right side.
In the sixth inning, the Gators ended Pierucci's day. SF State roughed her up for three more runs on two hits. One, a RBI double by Terrel, the other a two run triple by Brent to put the Gators up 4-1. The Gators added a run in the bottom of the seventh for good measure, a solo home run by shortstop
Jennifer Lewis, her first of the season.
The four runs was more than enough support for Clark, who went 7.0 complete, scattering eight hits, one unearned run, with a pair of walks and a strike out in 110 pitches.
In the night cap the Gators once again fell behind early. SF State was trailing 2-1 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning when junior
Kasie Trezona launched a ball over the fence for a grand slam for her first collegiate hit.
Unfortunately, the Gators could not hold the 5-2 lead and the Otters tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh.
Jenny Obbema got the no decision, she threw 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.
Lindsey Cassidy is currently in the circle for the Gators, she's thrown 3.2 scoreless innings. With the Otters coming to bat in the bottom of the 11
th the game was halted due to darkness. Play will resume at noon tomorrow before the completion of the series with the regularly scheduled double header.
