LA JOLLA, Calif. – The SF State women's basketball team shot 29.3 percent on the evening and was held to 40 points, as No. 20 UC San Diego defeated the Gators 63-40 on Friday night at RIMAC Arena. The Gators had two players score in double figures but struggled from beyond the arc.
Leading the team in scoring were seniors
Naila Washington and
Tatsiana Dashkevich. Washington finished with a team-high 14 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds and two steals. From the field, Washington shot 6-for-15, she was also 1-for-3 from long range.
Dashkevich was equally impressive in her shooting performance, finishing with 11 points, on 4-of-9 shooting, while grabbing nine rebounds and five assists.
Freshman center
Kiara Ginwright recorded seven blocks on the evening, giving her 111 for the year, one shy of tying the CCAA single season record for blocks in a year set by UC Riverside's Donna Hammond-Mares, a mark that has stood since the 1982-83 season.
In the opening period the Gators (9-17/6-13 CCAA) fought hard with the Tritons (22-3/17-2). After falling behind 8-0 to begin the game, SF State went into the second quarter down three, 16-13.
Lauryn Catching proved to be the spark off the bench for the Gators, scoring all seven of her points in the first quarter to lead the Gators.
After the opening period the Tritons pulled away from the Gators on the strength of their inside game. UCSD finished the night with 32 points in the paint, 18 of that coming in the first half.
The Triton's senior forward Farrah Shokoor finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 19 points and tallying 13 rebounds. She did most of her work in the first half where she scored 17 points and 10 rebounds before the intermission.
Out of the break the Gators offense could not find their touch from long range. The Gators shot just 4-of-19 from beyond the arc but was just 1-for-8 after halftime.
SF State wraps up the 2015-16 season tomorrow night at Cal State San Bernardino. The Gators and Coyotes will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Coussoulis Arena.
