SAN FRANCISCO--- The 18
th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos used a 11-2 run mid-way through the second half to key their 55-40 victory over the SF State Gators this evening in a conference match-up at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Broncos had three players score in double digits while
Brantley Bynum led the Gators with 11 points.
The Broncos (18-4, 11-4 CCAA) held the Gators to just 24% shooting including 18% in the second half. They also out-rebounded their hosts 40-27. SF State's defense held the Broncos to just 37% shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers by its guests.
Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and increased its lead to 11-2 on a tip-in by Jordan Faison at the 15:40 mark of the first half.
SF State (12-9, 6-9 CCAA) outscored the Broncos 17-7 in the next 12 minutes to take a 19-18 lead on a
Brantley Bynum lay-up.
Cal Poly Pomona held a 22-21 lead with 10 seconds left, but
Coley Apsay hit a three as the buzzer sounded to give the Gators a 24-22 lead heading into the locker room at the half.
The first three minutes was close with the Gators' Bynum hitting a three off an assist from
Floyd Wormley to give SF State a 29-26 lead.
Quentin Taylor back to back three's gave the Broncos a 32-29 lead, but the Gators' Bynum hit two free throws to cut the deficit to just 32-31.
Cal Poly then went on a 11-2 run to take a double digit (43-33) lead with just 6:39 left in the game. SF State would not go away as the hosts cut the deficit to 46-40 on a lay-up by Treaven Dufffy at the 2:31 mark of the second half.
The Broncos closed out the game scoring the final nine points all from the line to take the 55-40 CCAA road victory over the Gators.
Bynum tied his season high with 11 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Wormley added 9 points for the hosts while Apsay added 6 points.
Taylor finished with a game high 14 points for the Broncos with Faison chipping in 13 points and Barry Bell adding 12 points.
With the loss, SF State remains in the seventh spot one game out of the sixth spot which is held by Sonoma State. They are two games out of fifth, which Cal State Monterey Bay is in going into this upcoming week.
The Gators will return to the court this Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30pm PST, when they travel to Rohnert Park to face Sonoma State in a conference showdown between Bay Area rivals at The Wolves Den. They will return home this Thursday, February 11 for a 7:30pm PST conference game with Cal State San Marcos.
