@SFState_MBB Fights Hard But Can't Overcome Late Run by 22nd Broncos

POMONA–   The SF State Gators trimmed a 7-point deficit to 52-50 with 51 seconds left I regulation, but the 22nd ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos finished the game on a 5-0 run to advance to the semi-finals of the CCAA Basketball Championships with a 57-50 victory over the Gators.  SF State finishes the season with a 16-11 record, its fourth 16-win season in the last six years. 

"I am really proud of our seniors in (Andre) Jones, (Jon) McMurry and (Floyd) Wormley as they left it all out on the court this evening," said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  "I am also proud of our team as we were just one or two plays short of winning this game against a good team in Cal Poly Pomona"  "I couldn't be happier for what we accomplished this year and the future of Gator basketball."

Jon McMurry paced the Gators with 18 points and five rebounds. The senior guard/forward went 7-for15 from the field including connecting of his 10 attempts from beyond the arc.  Floyd Wormley added 13 points and also had two blocked shots to give him 44 for his two-year career, which places him 7th on the Gators' career list and his 31 this season is 10th on the single season list.

Also finishing the season in the Gator record brooks was junior transfer Coley Apsay has he went one-for-two from the line.  Apsay finished the season 56-for-63 from the line for a 88.9% shooting percentage, which places him second on the Gators' single season list.

A McMurry three with 8:35 left in the first stanza gave the Gators a 20-16 lead.  The 22nd ranked Broncos came back and took a 21-20 lead as a jumper by Chris Sullivan capped a 5-0 Cal Poly Pomona run.  A Coley Apsay three capped a 7-1 run by the Gators as they took a 27-22 lead with a little under five minutes left in the half.

Cal Poly Pomona (22-6) ended the half outscoring SF State 10-2 to take a 32-29 lead into the locker room. Back to back three's by McMurry gave the Gators a 35-34 lead early in the second half, but the Broncos went on a 10-2 to take a 44-37 lead capped by a three-point play by Jordan Faison.

SF State would not go away as a three by Apsay off an assist from Andre Jones capped a 6-0 run by the Gators to cut the Bronco lead to 44-43 mid-way through the second half.  Cal Poly Pomona once again increased its lead to 5 (52-47) on a Quentin Taylor jumper with just 1:50 left, but the Gators would not go away as a lay-up by McMurry ad a made free throw by Apsay cut the deficit to 52-50 with :51 on the clock.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Faison gave the Broncos a 55-50 lead late in the game and two free throws by Sullivan gave the hosts a 67-60 victory.  They will play UC San Diego on Friday in Stockton in the semi-finals of the CCAA Basketball Championships at The Stockton Arena at 2:35pm.  In the first semi-final game, it'll be Cal State L.A. facing Humboldt State with a scheduled tip-off of 12:05pm. Faison paced the victors with 18 points while Sullivan had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Gators had 14 assists on their 19 made baskets including three each from Jones and Apsay.  They also forced 14 turnovers with 7 coming off of steals (three by Jones).
