SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators scored a season high 14 runs on 23 hits in their 14-3 conference home victory over the Cal State East Bay Pioneers. Eight different Gators had multiple-hit days led by
Myles Franklin's four-hits as SF State won its fourth straight game.
"Today was a great day for our offense to show what they are capable of doing," said first-year head coach
Tony Schifano. "We received quality innings from our bullpen and made some great plays on defense. It's a good conference win."
The Gators, who moved into fourth place in the CCAA North Division, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Nick Jackson scored on a two-out single by
Joe Chedid. Jackson reached on a lead-off single and went to second on a bunt single by
Bryce Brooks.
The Pioneers (14-11, 5-9 CCAA) tied the game in their half of the third inning on a Ryan Wheat single which brought in Chris Porter who reached on a lead-off triple. SF State, who has now won five of their last six games, broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning which was started by three straight singles by
Myles Franklin,
Joe Chedid and
Carter Gambrell (who's single brought in Franklin). The Gators batted around in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.
Cal State East Bay added another run on a Michael Thomas sacrifice fly which scored Joey Dice in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 7-2. The Gators (13-12, 7-8 CCAA) added seven more runs in the next three innings including three in the seventh inning to take a 14-2 lead. Cal State East Bay added a run in its half of the ninth to make the final 14-3 SF State.
Franklin, who now has reached base safely in the last 11 straight games, was 4-for-5 with two runs scored while driving in two runs.
Connor Fraser, Gambrell and Brooks each were 3 for 5 with two runs batted in while Jackson,
Chris Nicholson and
Dalton Pizzuti each had two hits apiece.
Dillon Houser (2-2) picked up the win in the start for the hosts, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up 6 hits and two runs while striking out one. SF State sent six pitchers to mound in Houser,
Jackson Gentes,
Ulices Moreno,
Shane Martin,
Grant Vogenthaler and
Alex Navarrete. Donovan Ramirez (3-3) recorded the loss for Cal State East Bay.
SF State will return to the diamond this weekend for a three-game series in San Bernardino against the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. The series will begin with a doubleheader starting at 12pm this Saturday, April 2
nd at San Bernardino's Fiscalini Field.
