SAN FRANCISCO--- The Cal State East Bay Pioneers took a 4-0 lead after two innings and never looked back as they defeated the SF State Gators 6-2 in a CCAA match-up at SF State's Maloney Field. The Pioneers' top three hitters went a combined 9-for-14, scoring three runs and driving in two.
Marcus Wise, Raymond Jones and Rudy Navarro led off the game with three straight singles. Wise scored the game's first run when Troy Resch reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Jones scored on an error by the Gators to give the guests a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers (23-14, 14-12 CCAA) doubled their lead with a two-run second inning. Kris Bartlett had a one-out infield single, went to second on the overthrow. Bartlett scored on a single by Wise. The Pioneer lead-off hitter then stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a single by Jones to give Cal State East Bay a 4-0 lead.
Cal State East Bay added an insurance run in the third on a two-out single by Dakota Conners which brought in Chris Porter, who reached on a one-out walk.
SF State scored its first run in its half of the third inning.
Andrew Breen led off the inning with a walk, went to second on an infield single by
Jake Faulkner. Breen scored on a single up the middle by Brooks, who went 2-for-5 with a run batted in for the Gators. The hosts had a chance to score more, but Jacob Call induced the next Gator to fly out and ending the inning with a double play.
The Pioneers made it 6-1 visitors on a pinch-hit single by Daniel Goodrich which brought in Zack Perugi in the top of the sixth inning. Pergui reached on a lead-off single and scored on Goodrich's single. The Gators cut into the deficit in their half of the sixth inning.
Chris Nicholson had a lead-off single, went to third on a single by
Dalton Pizzuti and scored on a single by
Ryan Burke. Pizzuti and Burke advanced a base on a sacrifice by
Logan Marston, but were stranded there as the Andrew Fernandez struck out the next Gator and induced the final out on a ground out.
Fernandez (3-1) picked up the win in relief for Cal State East Bay, pitching four innings, giving up four hits, one run and striking out five. Jacob Call started the game, pitched four innings of six-hit ball, giving up one run and walking one. Derek Oetken pitched a scoreless ninth while giving up just one hit. Wise, Jones and Navarro all had three hits apiece for the Pioneers with Wise scoring two of their six runs.
Peter Reyes (1-2) recorded the loss in the start for SF State. Three Gator relievers pitched scoreless innings in
Shane Martin,
Dylan Bell and
Alex Navarrete. Martin pitched two innings, gave up three hits and walked one. Bell pitched one inning and gave up one hit while Navarrete pitched 0.2 innings of one-hit ball. Burke finished the day 4-for-4 for the Gators while Pizzuti and Brooks each had two hits. Burke and Brooks drove in the Gators' two runs.
SF State will return to the diamond this weekend for a four-game home-away series with the Stanislaus State Warriors. The series will begin this Friday, April 22 at 3pm for a single nine-inning game in Turlock. The two teams will then face each other in a doubleheader this Saturday, April 23 starting at noon at SF State's Maloney Field. The series will conclude this Sunday, April 24 for a noon starting single game in Turlock.
