@SFStateBaseball Falls 2-1 Despite Strong Effort by Ulices Moreno in Series Opener

TURLOCK, Calif.--- In a pitcher's duel in the conference series opener from Turlock, Calif., it was the Stanislaus State Warriors defeating the visiting SF State Gators 2-1.  The Warrior win spoiled a great effort from SF State's Ulices Moreno who had a season high four strikeouts in the Gators loss.

"We got a great effort on the mound from (Ulices) Moreno on the road against a good hitting team," said SF State head coach Tony Schifano.  "Right now, we have to find a way to score some runs."

Ulices Moreno recorded the no decision in the start for the Gators (16-19, 9-15 CCAA) as he pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 7 hits, one run and striking out four.  Brent Montgomery (4-2) recorded the loss in relief for the visitors, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up two hits and one run while striking out three.  Shane Martin pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out one.  Today's one-run loss was the Gators' fourth loss in the last five games in which they lost just by one run in the last week.

The game was scoreless until the Warrior fourth when Kyle Nixon had a lead-off triple and scored on a ground out by Gino Franceschetti to Joe Chedid at second.   Stanislaus State (19-18, 10-15 CCAA) held the 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh inning.  Bryce Brooks had a lead-off single, went to second on his sixth stolen base of the season.  With one out, Brooks scored on a single up the middle by Ryan Burke to tie the score at 1-1.  Ryan Taylor came into pinch run for Burke at second as the Gators had a chance to take the lead, but Jordan Kron retired the next two batters to preserve the 1-1 tie.

The Gators had another chance to take the lead as Chedid had a two-out walk.  He then stole second, his second of the season, but was stranded there as Kron induced an inning ending ground out to short.

The hosts took a 2-1 lead in their half of the eighth inning.  Patrick Mulry had a lead-off single, went to second on a wild pitch and third on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Chavarria.  Then with one out and the count 1-0, Mulry scored on a single by Aldo Koutsoyanopu to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. Nick Voumard came in to pitch in the Gator ninth and retired the guests in order to preserve the 2-1 Warrior lead en route to his first save of the season.  Kron improved to 7-4 as he pitched 8 innings, giving up three hits and one run, striking out four and walking one.

The two teams will continue the four-game home-away series as they will face each other in a noon starting doubleheader at Maloney Field on the campus of SF State in San Francisco tomorrow afternoon.
