TURLOCK, Calif. – The SF State women's softball team ended the Tournament of Champions on a high note, defeating Saint Martin's 4-0 on the strength of a three-hit complete game shutout by
Jenny Obbema, the Gators depart Turlock going 3-3 for the weekend.
Obbema (5-4) needed just 76 pitches to dispatch the Saints who entered the weekend leading the GNAC in hitting, averaging .323 as a team. Obbema went the distance throwing seven complete, scattering three hits, with four walks and a strike out. With the win, she has set a career-high in wins.
Offensively, the Gators (22-15) got contributions from up and down the lineup, SF State scored their four runs on nine hits. Seven players recorded at least a hit on the day, Maddison Collins and
Jennifer Lewis were the only Gators with multiple hits. Collins was 2-for-4 with a run scoring double, while Lewis went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Alexis Mattos and
Marisa Andrade had the other RBI base hits. Andrade got the Gators on the board in the bottom of the second when she slapped a single to right center that scored
Angelica Terrel. The Gators tacked on two more runs in a three-run second, back-to-back doubles by Mattos and Collins scored the Gators other runs in the big inning.
The three run second ended the day for previously unbeaten Saints starter Lauren Maley (5-1). Maley went 1.2 innings, and was roughed up for six hits, three runs, all earned with a pair of strike outs. Lindsey Miller took the ball the rest of the way for Saint Martin's.
The Gators added an insurance run in the bottom of the third inning when Lewis led off the inning with a single to right center. She moved over to second when
Kayli Shaw reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt. Lewis later scored on a successful double steal by her and Shaw.
Defensively, the Gators were strong, turning two double plays in support of Obbema. The first a beautiful 4-6-3 double play in the top of the first inning that helped set the tone for the day. The second came in the top of the fourth inning after a leadoff single started the frame for Saint Martin's.
The Gators will return to action on Wednesday when they host rival Sonoma State for a double header starting at noon at the SF State Softball Field.
