SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.--- For their second consecutive match and third of the season, the San Francisco State Gators played to a double overtime tie as they run their unbeaten streak to 8.
Kimber Lohman connected on a perfect cross from
Autumn Fox in just two minutes into the match for the Gators' goal. The Coyotes tied the match 18 minutes later off a header by Susan Ibarra.
San Francisco State outshot its hosts, 14-8 including 7-5 in shot on goal attempts. The visitors also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Gators (5-1-3, 2-0-2 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead at the 2:01 mark when Lohman scored her third goal of the season off a perfect cross from Fox. This was Fox's team leading fifth of the season. San Francisco State had a chance to double its lead, seven minutes later but Megan Vina stopped
Sarah Guensler's attempt of increasing the Gators' lead.
The score remained 1-0 Gators until the 21
st minute when Susan Ibarra connected on a corner kick from Amanda Lopez to tie the match at 1-1 for the Coyotes.
San Francisco State had three chances to take the lead back from the Coyotes in the final 30 minutes of the first half but either Vina recorded a save or the Gators' shots sailed wide. The first came in the 33
rd minute when
Sierra Sagasta's shot was stopped by Vine. Two minutes later,
Taylor Halstenson's shot sailed wide as did
Bianca Lowe's in the 37
th minute. The match went into halftime tied at 1-1.
The Gators came out on the offensive attack early in the second half, but Vina came up big for the Coyotes as she stopped
Brittany Oldham's and Lohman's attempts to give the guests the lead in the 52
nd minute.
Cal State San Bernardino (2-5-1, 1-2-1 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead with just six minutes left in regulation when Megan Todd's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Gators'
Christina Holguin.
It looked like the Gators were going to take the lead late in regulation, but Lohman and Lowe each had their shot attempt sail wide. Then with less than a minute left, Fox and Lowe each had their chance to be the hero for the Gators be stopped by Vina to send the match into overtime.
The Coyotes recorded the only shot attempt in the first overtime period in the 96
th minute as Holguin stopped Todd's attempt for the golden goal. In the final ten minutes, the Gators had two chances for the golden goal but
Jada Williams' shot was blocked and Sagasta's shot sailed high over the net in the final seconds of the match.
Holguin finished with four saves in goal for the Gators while Vina had six saves in goal for Cal State San Bernardino.
The Gators will continue their five-match road trip this coming week with a pair of conference matches in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. San Francisco State will be under the lights this Friday, September 30 for a 7pm starting match with Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif. They will round out its road trip a week from this afternoon for a 2pm match at Cal State L.A.
